Sleep Enhancer

Posted by Restless Sleeper on April 20, 2003 at 21:29:06:

I have never been a good sleeper, but I have just heard about glasses that one can wear to bed, and its meant to enhance quality of sleep for those who cant sleep well, and also for shiftworkers as well. Its meant to help you wake up feeling sprightly and with a spring in your step. lol. Hope so. But it is new, so I am not sure how many may know of it yet.

Does anyone know about these glasses, or have used them?

Hi, Restless.

Sounds pretty far-fetched to me. How can glasses help you when your eyes are shut?

I just saw it the program on the tele tonight. They have done research on these special glasses for the last 15 years. They emit a special blue light which you switch on when you wear the glasses. Apparently the blue light emitted has an effect on your body clock.

The pentagon are even looking into these glasses as they feel they will help their military men perform to peak during nightshift etc.

They wont be on the market here till four or five months from now, but they showed some case studies who had tried the glasses and definitley noticed a difference, as to how fresh they felt when they woke up, and woke up before their alarm even went off. I am really looking forward to trying these Walt, I have such a problem in the mornings.

There is a website that the tv program will have up at noon tomorrow, well thats my time. its www.7perth.com.au

Thanks, Baby Girl, for straightening me out.

I WAS feeling a little insecure when I wrote my response since I know that simply exposing the skin to certain frequencies can profoundly change internal metabolic function.

Looking forward to hearing more about this light therapy.

And I probably didnt explain myself all that well, Walt. It was late here and all.

It looks promising Walt. What I did forget to mention is that you dont have to wear them whilst you sleep. You can switch on the blue light, whilst you are watching tv, on the computer, anywhere I think (may not want to wear them out in public. :)), and its for 2 hours per day that you need to wear them.

What was interesting was that this same beneficial effect on the bodyclock doesnt happen if you use a red light or a different coloured light with the glasses. It has to be the blue light. Thats what they found when they did the research. It was specifically the blue infrared light that made all the difference to the quality of sleep and needing less quantitiy of sleep.

Thanks, Baby.

How can I get technical information about it? Do I have to call a phone number overseas?

Yes, if you wanted technical information on it, that would be an international call for you. How about if I call them for you, as its just a local phone call for me?
What do you want me to find out?

Thanks, Baby.

What a wonderful offer.

If you tell them I am an MD in the USA who wants to see the technical information they have about the wavelengths and the effectiveness research, they would know what to send.

They could send it to my personal email at: waltstoll@knology.net Or FAX it to me at (850) 769-1436. If they would prefer to snail mail it to me let me know.

Walt

I called the organization from work today about the insomnia glasses. I had quite an interesting conversation with a man by the name of Tom Duffy. He gave me quite a bit of information.

He will be emailing you shortly with the research information. Please let me know when you have received it. I also requested him to email me the information but I just realized that my email inbox is oversize so he may have tried to send it, and would have been rejected.

I was quite excited about the info he told me. Basically he said that if the insomnia is caused by a medical condition, such as not breathing properly at night etc, the glasses of course would not be able to help that, but they do help with normalizing the circadian rythmn etc.

I told him that I have pretty much always had a problem with my sleep and waking up, for as long as I can remember, since back in high school, Walt. He said that with these glasses, you only have to wear them for 2 hours for approx 1-2 days and it puts you back into the normal way of sleeping for a couple of months and then if you find that you are out of sync again, you just have to wear them for that amount of time again.

He even mentioned that would I be interested in trying the glasses before they are launched on the market in four - five months, as they have had a few people try them, and see if they get any improvement. He couldnt promise anything, but he got my personal contact details, so I am really hoping that he gives me a call back and I can try them out. If he doesnt get back to me, I am going to call him back. I am desperate. My sleep seems to still be quite restless, so I am not sure if these glasses will help or not, but I am willing to try almost anything at this point, especially as it can help shift workers tremendously.

The glasses are going to be relatively inexpensive. When they are launched on the market, they will retail for 100 - 200 dollars Australian dollars.
