Doc, I fractured my C-6 vertebre in three different places about a month ago. I am in a halo at the moment, and i was wondering about how long would it take my break to heal. I was told 6 to 8 week and 3 months. Also if i am a smoke occasionally does that slow the healing process. Thanks for your time

If you want something in the body to heal faster you certainly need to take care of the body and keep your P.H. balanced and smoking does not support the Liver nor the Thyroid gland; The neck and keeping the thyroid gland functioning would go hand in hand in my book;
Since we are made up of what we breath and eat and drink and think; To have a healing faster, we need to breath clean air [this covers the smkoing idea] eat the right foods and drink plenty of water not soda;

Amen, Terri-Lynn, and it goes further than the common-sense argument. There are data published that show that smokers' bone heals more slowly than non-smokers' bone. (Similarly, smokers have more osteoporosis than non-smokers, all other things being equal).

Hi, Nathan.
Only the "doc on the spot" can advise you here.
However, there is NO doubt about the effect of smoking on bone healing. If your doc has not already told you this, he is not a very well informed doc!
Listen to Terri-Lynn and EllieK.
Also, the same things that are best for osteoporosis will help speed up healing a fracture. See the osteoporosis archives.
Let us know how you do.
