Tonsil Trouble

Posted by michelle on June 10, 2003 at 21:17:25:

I have had recurring problems with my throat. it started almost 10 months ago. we were out drinking, i touched the gound and the hand went in the mouth. within 1 week my mouth was covered in little bumps and my tonsils were swollen. I saw the dr. 6 or 7 times. first i was told bacterial or fungal infection. then i was told virus, then strep. then virus, then strep. I was tested for HIV and Mono and also had a full immunity panel done and was A-OK. within about 2 months or so, after all the different antibiotics etc. the bumps went away and i had little or no problem. my insurance ran out and I gave up. then it started again. however i no longer have any bumps, just constant swollen tonsils and a feeling of heavy mucous when i swallow. today my throat is especially sore, and right near the tonsil on the right there seems to be some type of sore. like a puncture. I am a 27 year old female who has HSV-1 in the Nether regions. I have never experienced HSV in or on my mouth EVER. I do smoke about 1/2 pack a day. Otherwise I am in excellent health. Should I be overly concerned? Or will some goldenseal, echinacea and Vitamin C take care of this?

I must also mention I have no serious pain, beyond the tonsil irritation. No trouble eating or drinking and no other swollen lymph glands.

Hi, Michelle.

The first thing I would do is stop the 1/2 pack of cigs a day. That much is plenty to greatly increase the stress to the tissue and to greatly reduce the immune reserves you have to cope with that irritation. That, and very warm saline gargles several times a day (see the archives), should make a world of difference in a week or two.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
