I've quit smoking and getting fat

Posted by Nita on August 15, 2003 at 10:47:22:

OK. I ordered Dr. Stoll's book but haven't read it yet. I'm going to, I'm goin to!
I quit smoking 6 wks ago and I know (this time) that I can never start again. I've no more options left. I'm 45 and I feel that God has given me one last chance to NOT die of lung cancer (my sister died in my arms at age 40 from lung cancer). Now, I'm getting fat. I am 5'4" and weigh 145 and growing. I am starting a new diet this next week and I am going to try and explain some of it to you. I would like your opinions about it. I don't know all there is to know about it so bear with me. You start the 1st day eating nothing but fruit-raw fruit all day. The next day is vegetables. The 3rd day is fruit and vegetables and I don't really know what is next yet. (I am receiving the instructions tonight) This diet is supposed to make you have lots of energy (and I need that to carry this fat little body around). My friend is on it and lost 7 lbs the first week. On weekends she cheats a little. The last time, she lost 17 lbs in 1 month. OK. Does anyone know anything about this diet and what do you think? It also helps to cleanse your system and I need that. I am not as dedicated as the rest of you guys about no sugar, no wine, no bread, etc. Do you think that the weight will come back after I do this for a month? I think that if I can get it off, I can keep it off and still have a steak and potato occasionally. I have never been fat. I was always slender. I really don't want or need any smart-___ replys but thanks anyway.

Congrats!

follow wellness. Think of food as something for your body, as something to aid in this gift (body) from God. It changes the way you look at food.
Think of the health you are gaining by reducing or stopping smoking..and apply that good energy to your food/nutrition.
:) very proud of you - that is a HUGE accomplishment.

You have to understand that if you eat too much and do too
little you will gain weight and to loose weight you might
have to go to extremes of activity and cuting calories. I
like My diet. Eat anything I want but Half of what I usually
would and increase activity and make simple movements like
an exercise and bend, reach, or go further. Having an
activity that is easy to exagerate helps and Thinking about
every mouthful you take will drop weight fast. You have to
have energy to do it since it is Work but if you are
determined it will be easy. You have to think about it
constantly.

Quick weight loss...

... is one of the best ways to achieve long term weight gain.

When you lose weight, you almost always lose muscle. (When you gain weight, you always gain some muscle, too.) Strength athletes have known this for YEARS. What you need to control is how much of that weight loss is muscle vs. fat. The faster you lose weight, the higher percentage of weight loss is muscle. When you lose muscle your metabolism slows down. When your metabolism slows down, you gain weight even easier than before.

"The last time, she lost 17 lbs in 1 month."
The LAST TIME? To lose weight effectively, she should have only lost that weight ONCE. Obviously, she gained it back.

The most effective weight loss should be no more than a poudn a WEEK. And any diet you go on should be something you can live with FOREVER.

Thanks Vince. Doesn't sound impossible but does sound logical. i never thought I would have this weight problem. I was always skinny, too skinny. This extra weight is depressing but I WILL get it off. Thanks again.

Thank You Michele. Quitting smoking is an accomplishment for me. I loved to smoke and hated it too. I hope this food addiction is not as tough to break as the smoking addiction was. If it is, I will overeat for about 30 yrs. Instead of 6 pallbearers, I will have a forklift to carry the casket.

I was always thin till an injury and I put on 25 lbs.
When I recovered I realized how much the weight was slowing
me down and hated it. I just decided to get it off, even
hiting tennis balls at the courts with someone or by myself
with dress clothes on if I had 20 min to spare while
passing them and I exagerated every movement like bending
over to pick up the balls I bent further than I had to.
When eating I Thought about the food and ate half a
sandwich with One slice of bread and if I wanted more, I
thought hard about it and then ate what I had put in the
bread and Not more bread. In 3 weeks I lost 20+ lbs and
was back to my normal weight.

That depends on a lot of factors: type of workout, effectiveness of workout, adequacy of rest and nutrition between workouts, etc. For example, too much exercise, especially gobs of cardio exercise, can actually DECREASE muscle mass.

The best workout in the world can't gain muscle on a severely calorie-restricted diet.

Good for you. I am a die hard smoker and refuse to quit for various reasons. Listen to everyone, diets do not work, change your eating habits. Also include exercise into your daily routine. Forget what your bathroom scales tell you. Muscle weighs more than fat. I am 50years old, weigh 70kg and am 5'7" tall. I run or go mountain trecking 6 days a week and this keeps me fit.I eat a high protein, low carbohydrate diet.AND most important of all, keep that sense of humour:-)

coconut oil

Try replacing coconut oil for your cooking oil and you will lose the craving for sweets and fat. Bake with it too. The breads taste really good and moist. It's a one to one exchange for other oils. You will lose weight slowly and have more energy.

The same thing happened to me. I quit drinking coffee
first, then the cigarettes went. I worked out five times a
week at the gym (as I had before I quit both adrenal
stimulants), ate the same amounts and same diet
(quite healthy) and I still gained weight. My body gained
a total of 20 pounds. UGH! It was really depressing,
but I knew that everyone's body reacts differently.
FINALLY, after about 1 year, all of a sudden, the pounds
started coming off, and fairly quickly. I had changed
nothing. It just took time for my body (metabolism) to
readjust. Now I am back to my normal weight, and it
isn't hard to stay there.

I thought that the reason that people who quit smoking
gained weight was because they ate more. Smoking helps
concentration so I would think that people who quit wind up
doing less till they adjust. Just working on fighting the
craving seems like it would affect other things.

Hi Vince,

Yes, most people who quit smoking probably do eat a
bit more (if not a lot more! :) , but I did not, and I know
others that didn't eat more either, yet still gained weight.

Coffee, cigarettes, diet sodas with caffeine, etc...all are
adrenal stimulants. They speed up your metabolism.
This is one reason why dancers (as well it keeps them
from eating) smoke. It helps them to stay thin by
messing with their natural metabolic rate.

If these habits are done over a long period of time, or
like yo-yo dieting, or anything that messes with your
metabolic rate is done at great length, your body will not
just pop back into a regular metobolic rate right away. It
takes time. From what I know about it, each body type
is different to begin with, so there are varying outcomes
once the adrenal stimulants are stopped.

So, yes you are right that most eat more, hence, weight
gain. But, as well, your body has to have time to
"rebalance." I have also been told that some yo-yo
dieters have problems permanantly with metabolic
rates, simply because the body has gotten so many
mixed messages. Their metabolic rate can stay very
low, even when excercising and eating well. The body
has its' own signal system and "computer log." Go
figure!

The coconut oil I use does not have a coconut smell or taste. I have a friend who doesn't like coconut and she couldn't tell.
Try Spectrum brand coconut oil.

Re: I've quit smoking and getting fat WHY? (Archive in smoking.)

Posted by Walt Stoll on August 18, 2003 at 07:13:41:

Thanks, My.

Smoking is a metabolic poison that reduces metabolic efficiency by 10%. This has been known as long as I have been in the business (more than 40 years). This explains why smokers age 10% faster, live 10% less years, have more than 10% reduction in their immunity, and utilize what they eat 10% less efficiently. A 10% increase in metabolic efficiency (calculated by a standard caloric requirement of 2000 calories a day for the average weight-stabilized person), that happens when the person stops smoking, would equate to 200 calories more/day being utilized. 200 calories/day would equal 6000 calories/month, the equivalent of 2#/month or 24# a year until the weight had risen enough for the extra weight to use up the extra 200 calories to just carry it around!

There is no mystery as to why people tend to gain weight when they stop smoking! Just by eating 200 calories a day, less than they had been eating, will obviate the problem.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Zarin....I have to have a sense of humor. I can get fat, quit smoking, lose a boyfriend all in 1 month, but I will never lose my sense of humor. On my desk, I have a saying that says: "Most smiles are started by another smile". I have never had a problem smiling. I may have to have some cosmetic surgery done around my mouth because of it, but that is minor compared to what "lack of smiling" does to you. Thank You.

Most grocery stores won't have them; a few stores might have them however. You will probably have to go to a health food store.
