I would like to quit smoking. I am thinking about going cold turkey. Any advise from ex-smokers on how and what to expect. Some people go cold turkey and have no problem others have so many side effects. Thanks for your info.

if the trigger is there you will smoke it - if its not you won't! I also hear smoking causes cavities!
Good luck!

Cathy, Take it from an ex-smoker who smoked for 35 years. I quit 2 months ago and do not really crave them as I once did. My sister died of lung cancer at age 40. We were 2 yrs apart and started smoking early in life. She did a anti-smoking ad right before she died. It will break your heart to watch it. I stopped when she was diagnosed as she did. After she died I did not start back until 1 yr later and I started full force. You would think that your sister dying in your arms would make you never pick up another one but it didn't. I smoked until 2 mo. ago. I used the patch for 1 week and I knew that I could not smoke and also wear the patch as it made my heart race and just not feel good. I have quit many times in my life so I hope this is the real one. I think this time, my mind tells me that God has given me one last chance. When I see other people smoking (and I want one)I think, "I can't. I can't even have one ever again". After watching my sisters children grow up without a mother, I know my last statement is true. "I can't have another cigarette, ever again" and that's all there is to it! Good Luck!

My uncle died of lung cancer at the age of 62. My mother died of lung cancer at the age of 86. The whole family, father and six kids, smoked from an early age. All gave up in the 60s apart from me and my sister. She takes after my mum. Probably has the right genes - UNTIL stress gets into your life - then the cancer starts.
I gave up for 10 years - easy peezy. Then I went through a divorce and started again. That was 15 years ago and I cant seem to give up.
I know everyone will say "You bloody fool". We know we are fools. But we are addicted to the damn things. It is hard. I know numerous people whose loved ones have died of lung cancer and they have just carried on. Why do we do that? I dont know.
I keep saying I will give up. But when? I dont know what to do about it. I worry about my health but cant seem to just do it. I am like an alcoholic but the drug is cigarettes. I need help. I wont have the patches because that is just filling your body with nicotine that you are addicted to. DON'T tell me that's right. It isnt the way. But I know I have to find a way. I am 54 and getting to the age when I really do have to do something. I feel helpless, like an alcoholic must feel.
