7 months of worry help DR!

Posted by ronnie [3857.1411] on May 29, 2005 at 11:09:52:

I have had a sore throat, neck and ear along with an enlarged lymph node on the left side for 7 months now.
I have seen an ENT who has scoped my 3 times , once under sedation while having the base of my tongue biopsied. The rsults of the biopsy were chronic irritation. I have had a ct (wihout contrast) which came back normal. I recently had my lymph node biopsied but the surgeon couldnt get it all and said the nodes were matted. But the results were reactive follicular hyperplasia.
ENT has no idea and thinks maybe lingual tonsilitis. I still think maybe cancer. A year and a half ago I started having some throat trouble after having a wisdom tooth pulled on that side, then 7 months ago after my flu it got alot worse! btw im 35 and have smokes 1 pack a day for 17 years.

Hi Ronnie,

If you are so afraid of cancer, WHY are you still smoking?

Start there and I bet the throat improves in weeks.

You will get more kisses too. :)

Ronnie,

Get serious!

Ask your doc right out if your smoking could cause this. He will have to say yes since this kind of change preceeds cancer sometimes by several years. It is technically a precancerous condition. IF the doc has not strongly suggested stopping smoking, in my opinion you need a better doc.

Like Ron asked, why are you still smoking with this scare going on? Your body is trying to tell you something--you need to listen to it. Listening to it now might save you from worse things down the road.....

Also, I'd look to that wisdom tooth removal too. Maybe a nerve was aggravated during removal, and you're getting some referred pain from it. I have occasional ear and throat pain on the same side as an unhappy wisdom tooth I still have. It didn't use to give me trouble, and when I mentioned its possible removal to my dentist, she said that pulling it now at my age (42) might cause more problems than it'll prevent because of nerve damage (don't understand why this concern goes up with age).

Good luck,
Tab

when I lost a molar,my last remaining wisdom tooth grew down into the space, so I have a fairly new tooth now-think of it as a reserve.

Do you think I could have lingual tonsilits? I guess I am wondering if its very likely to have had all these tests come back negative and actually have cancer. The lymph node biopsy was suggested by an internal medicine specialist and she said they might not be able to tell me what is wrong.
When the surgeon said the nodes were matted it made me worry even more although the pathology came back negative.
The ENT seems confident that its not cancer as well. 7 months of going to doctors and no diagnosis is almost as bad as actually being told I do have cancer. Sorry, Im just really worried about this at times.
Thanks.

Wanted to ask also, can nodes become matted from anything other than cancer or TB? Could the duration of them being enlarged cause this as well, Thanks again!

Typical question from a non-smoker. Understands nothing about addiction.

Ronnie,

ALL "tonsils" are just lymph nodes that are directly exposed to the oropharyngeal environment.

Ronnie,

Chronic inflammation (as certified by your biopsy) is the most common cause. Now, what might you be doing that could cause chronic inflammation? Could it be your smoking? Of course, chronic inflammation is a very common precurser of cancer.
