Second-Hand smoke... risk or not

Posted by Ron [205.2318] on May 31, 2006 at 09:48:45:

Hi all you health-conscious people.

What have you heard about the risk to non-smokers from living with a smoker or from working in a place which
caters to the smoking public?

I recently heard an anti-smoking spokeman who stated that a non-smoker who worked in a bar or bingo hall for eight hours a day inhaled the equivalent of "two packs a day".

I also recall hearing this a few years ago, but the
criteria was stated a little more clearly..
It was somewhat less scary when the amount of pollution was stated at the "equivalent of smoking 2 packs over an entire YEAR".... (Not 2 packs a day)

Of course, the media does not bother to question which
numbers are the truth or closer to the truth.
The public is quick to believe the worse case without
taking anyone to task.

Quebec and Ontario are now in their first day of a
new anti-smoking law, forbidding smoking in bars, bingo halls, restaurants, covered patios, and even in
separately ventilated smoking rooms which were built
about three years ago to accommodate smokers.

I think it is a plot to make the new immigrants from China feel uncomfortable or unwelcome since they are a (largely smoking) segment of the population.

Don't you love the freedom we enjoy, which we have fought wars over to maintain?

Ron

traffic fumes)

When it comes to stocks you have a choice, you can be in the market or not in at all. No harm. Being around smoke is not always a choice we get to make. I fail to see why you would compare the two.

Ron,

The first published study was done more than 30 years ago. They measured the nicotine in the urine of smokers and non smokers in the same room. The non smokers had 5/6 of the amount of nicotine in their urine as the smokers did. This is an indication of the danger. ALL subequent research agrees with this first study. That is why, currently, the laws have caught up with this public health menace.

With jets leaving things like this in the sky above me and cars putting along the roads screwing up the air I breathe, I don't need the added worry of someone else's secondhand smoke. They need to keep their smoke and their butts to themselves. Maybe if there weren't so many smokers that imposed on others with their smoke a littering (you should see the beach I live at, it looks like an ashtray) non-smokers wouldn't be so irritated by them. I live in California and am soooo glad that I don't have to smell smoke while I eat in a restaurant. Soon there will be a smoking ban on the beach here and it is fine by me.

tks for the px.. used to live out West.. too. too many dang cars on the road

Hi Walt,

I realize that kidney cancer has an association with
past smoking habits, but is it due to the nicotine or
some other irritant?

A high nicotine level in the urine could mean that
a trace shows up in the urine as much as does a heavy dose.. Could a saturation point be reached with even a low dose? Would a smoker of one pack a day have half the levels of a two pack a day smoker?
Have more recent urine test studies found similar
numbers?

I wonder if the urine tests were backed up with hair testing... to see if it was an anomaly or not.

If there is such an outcry about "Butts" on the beach,
I guess it is only a matter of time before someone complains and thong bikinis are also outlawed. ;>) rofl

Hi Sedona,

I heard that she died this week.
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/05/23/crowe-mon.html

Her compensation claim happened to be settled under a
liberal government.

Did you notice in the links within that article that the new Conservative government has cut a proposed pay hike for federal judges?
I wonder if there is any connection?

Yes, Ron, I could do without seeing the thongs, but I think my husband enjoys them. However those butts are sticking up all over the sand where my baby can eat them. I do understand that I have left myself open there for another of your wisecracks! I don't mind, though, you make me crack up sometimes!

Ron,

Since the normal level of nicotine is ZERO the finding of 5/6 as much nicotine in the urine of the non smokers as there was in the smokers speaks for itself.

If you want to know the particulars you have questioned, I am sure that you could find the actual article via the internet. I would be interested in hearing them since I have not read this article for about 30 years.

I have never heard that kidney cancer was related to stuff like this but lots of research has not been done yet. I DO know that pollutants in our drinking water and professions like anesthesiologists are closely connected to bladder cancer.

As a matter of fact, in the 10 years that I practiced in Ohio, in a small community of 10,000 population, 2 young anesthesiologists died of bladder cancer.

Hi Steph,

There I go, thinking that it was just YOU not wanting butts to get stuck between your toes as you shuffled through the sand.

When the baby grows up a little, butts will not be the problem.. In the meantime, how about solving the dilema by putting mittens on him?..
Actually, the husband would be less likely to get close to all those thongs if he wore mittens TOO. rofl :)
(Do you allow him to bring the camera to the beach?)
Just think of all those posteriors that could be saved for poster-ity?

I think that the good-looking people who smoke on the beach should wear a thong and simply "butt out". (Ooops! I did it again.)

Sorry to make your post the "butt" of my joke. :8)

Ron:

Do you believe that second-hand smoke is healthy, or at least insignificant? You seem to be leaning this way. What's your take?

I can tell you that having lived with smokers for years brought on bouts of bronchitis, congested lungs, and burning eyes. Why? Because I was breathing in the smoke, even though I never smoked. No, it wasn't media influence...it was the smoke.

Second-hand smoke is NOT beneficial to the lungs or to any other organ in the body. Let's not nitpick on the actual numbers, since we already KNOW that second-hand smoke is harmful. A number doesn't make any difference when you're coughing your lungs out!
