Smoking Cessation - Potassium & Sodium

Posted by Jared [6565.3308] on November 01, 2007 at 11:30:20:

Walt,

In the archive I read that you referred to taking a 50/50 mixture of potassium/sodium bicarbonates to help with smoking cessation. I read today on Wikipedia that Cream of Tartar (Potassium Bitartrate) is an old folk remedy for smoking cessation.

The question is, do you think Cream of Tartar could be used in lieu of Potassium Bicarbonate to acheive the same effect? I ask because it is easier to obtain cram of tartar than Potassium Bicarbonate, which, as far as I know, I would only be able to get from a compounding pharmacy.

Thanks,
jared

Hi, Jared.

I don't know. I had the impression that it was the careful combination of the K and Na, in the exact proportions, that made the difference. That is worth a compounding pharmacist, in my opinion--if that is true.

Thanks for the input, Walt.

I realize you probably don't know the citation(s) off the top of your head, but would you have any idea what journals and/or years to look for the studies backing up the KNaHCO3 treatment protocol?

Thanks,
Jared

Hi Jared,

In case you are not having luck with the natural
stop smoking treatments, here is a new-old treatment that could be helpful

Jared,

It would have been sometime in the '70s or '80s. Sorry I cannot do any better. When you find it please put the reference on the BB so I can update my files.

I wonder if mecmylamine is the ingredient in Pfizer's drug? I know someone who used the Pfizer drug successfully but can't recall the name.

Thanks, Walt.

BTW, does one need a prescription to get a compounding pharmacy to make potassium/sodium bicarbonate capsules? Or can they just make it for you if you ask?
