Hiya Doc,
I haven't been here in a long time. I didn't post my real name like I used to because my health posts show up on searches. You will probably recognize my email address though.
Ok..I believe that I have emphysema. I quit smoking, I've bought a trampoline. I have looked up the Buteyko Method and am purchasing the DVD.
What else should I do? It's good to see you again.

How long ago did you stop smoking and how long had you smoked? What are the results of your pulmonary function tests (in relationship to the normals of that lab)?

Along time ago I quit and mentioned it on this board. Then I had many deaths in the family and started again. I quit again just three weeks ago. This time, I know it's for good because I actually get angry when I feel that I want a cigarette. I have smoked since I was 10 years old. I am, at this writing, 44.
I haven't gone to the doctor. I'm already on an inhaler and advair for "asthma". Doc, it's been almost ten years since I was a regular here. I know what this is. I've seen it in my family members who have died of emphysema. I wheeze just going from one end of the house to another.
Years ago I bought, Saving Yourself From The Health Care Crisis, I remember in that book you said that jumping on a trampoline helps. That even if the afflicted persons can't jump themselves, they can sit on the tramp while someone else jumps. I can jump Doc.
I haven't gotten the shipment yet, It's to come Monday or Wednesday. But I know I can jump. You're going to think I'm goofy but it also seems to help to blow up balloons.
I'm horrified though, I used to work and travel. Now, I'm the custodial grandma of two children ages 4 and 2. I can't grocery shop with the two children. I can't breath well enough to get them from the parking lot to the store. If it was one I could...but not two. My poor husband who owns two day business *Marble and Granite) and a night/weekend *restaurant* business, has to shop for our family as well as working 16 hour days.
I can't believe that my breathing hasn't improved at all during these three weeks.
Help me, my dear old friend. I'm a bit worried about my family. My G-son said to me tonight, you're always sick and can't breath...I want to go to work with Papa.
Oh my Gosh! He's right. What am I doing to these kids being sick?

And besides the breathlessness, I'm also always dizzy and tired. I swear, I could sleep 20 hrs. a day.

As one approaches the diagnosis of emphysema their respiratory cells become exquisitely sensitive to cigarette smoke--to the extent that even being in a room with someone else who is a smoker (even though not smoking at the time) causes more damage. How many times has this happened?????
Even being in your home, where you have "enjoyed" many hours of smoking, causes damage. The smell proves that particles are being shed from the walls every second!
I still need, and so do you, your pulmonary function results. I need them to know how close you are to irreversibility and YOU need to know so you can plan your life from here on AND have something concrete to compare your success (or failure) to.
How many more respiratory cells can you afford to lose?
