Tetracycline and TEETH

Posted by Curious [8630.2450] on August 16, 2008 at 14:01:58:

This edentulous guy claims that he was given massive doses of tetracycline and other antibiotics, which caused his teeth to fall out.

Huh? I know that antibiotics kill bacteria, so that should HELP someone with gum disease. Also that tetracycline discolors/stains tooth enamel but do not know that it weakens teeth, and even if it did teeth breaking off are NOT the same as teeth falling out.

Am I missing something here, or is this guy full of it?

Curious,

I would need to know a LOT more about his case to have an opinion. For example: what is his lifestyle, his age and does he smoke, for starters.

Hi Dr. Stoll,

He is 65 now, but this happened years ago. And yes, he is a long-time smoker.

Does smoking have some interaction with tetracycline and other antibiotics that would cause teeth to fall out?

Thanks!

Curious,

The rule is: each dhronic stressor pushes the individual closer to the "edge of his cliff". Each year the person lives brings the edge of the cliff closer to where he lives.

Tetracycline is a chronic stressor to dentition but smoking is a much bigger stressor to this system. He can likely blame his edentullous condition directly on his smoking addiction. I hope he thinks is was worth it.

Thank you VERY MUCH, Dr. Stoll!!

He is an addictive personality -- gambles, smokes, drinks, etc. NOT a close friend. :)

Thanks, Curious.

His teeth are only the first things that are going to stop working, then.
