I had a Fusion with a metal plate and my own bone on disc C5-6 in September of 2001. As of today the surgeon says it hasn't even started to fuse, how long before he declares this a failed surgery. He keeps telling me I have to be careful about the screws working out and going though my throat, he really has me scared and what kind of surgery will it take to fix this problem.
Thank you Debi

Some of Walt's tips and the resulting testimonial about healing broken bones may apply. Some of the general spinal information might help. This depressing thread about a C6-7 cervical fusion helped me understand the surgery better. By reading this gem I learned a lot about why joints fail to fuse. This case has a choice tidbit from beloved health acolyte Helping You and a bit from Walt about how he had to go to the hospital because he was trying to do too much on the board. Hope they didn't offer you a complimentary spinal while you were there, Walt. Here's a testimonial to the efficacy of Doc Stoll's tips. This case ticked me off-- the hospital bed collapsed under this guy the night after his spinal surgery and they sent him out the door in pain like nothing happened.
To find out more, try these sections of the site: SpinalArchives, Bracing Archives (bracing is the initial cause of problems for which fusions are suggested solutions), and this article about SR, a proposed therapy for bracing and more.

Thanks, The Archives.
It would be great for anyone with spinal problems to do as you have suggested BEFORE they decide whether or not to have massive surgery like this. At least, then, they would have some idea of their options and make their decision with a clear, informed consent, mind.
Even after the damage of a failed surgery like this those same options, that may well have prevented the surgery in the first place, are the best things they can do.
Debi should at least look into Dr Becker's trickle charge machine that is now used routinely for bones that do not heal. The search engine should help her find that information.
Namaste`

I have used a bone stimulator machine for 3 hrs everyday since surgery with no results, my Dr says it is the best and wont try the trickle charge machine. I was put in a soft collar for the first 5 1/2 months and had a lot of pain before I talked him into a hard collar, shouldnt I have had a hard collar first, and what are my chances of being paralized with out another surgery.

Thanks, Debi.
I am reminded of the definition of insanity. It goes something like this. "When one does the same thing over and over, even though it is not working."
Dr Becker invented this concept and, so far as I know, it is designed to be used 24 hours a day.
I stand to be educated as to why this variation (which is not working) is "the best".

I am going to see a specialist who is going to do a mylegram and nerve conduction on the 17th of May will have results on the 29th of May and will talk to him about the trickle charge machine. Thank you.
Debi
P.S. Will let you know what I find out.
