Hello , i have read through the archives, and i decided to post my story.
I am a 23 yr old male, who enjoyed wrestling in high school, and i alos enjoyed pro wrestling, i had been in love with PW since i was a small child with aspirations of becoming one.
Well i wrestled in HS and took bumps and bruises like everyone else, and i wrestled with my friens on the side in the neighboorhood. well one night when i was 18, i was working a late night job in a call center, my right leg went completely numb and i was scared to death , i had to drive home over the arm rest using my left leg to drive. i saw my family dr who after checking me out, said it was all in my head.
i then found a respected spine dr in NC, who did my surgery. after seeing a couple of quacks(One wanted to use a BAC Cage, which i was told my my later surgeon is an archaic device nmot used that frequently anymore), well my surgeon did the metal fusion of my L5 S1 after i was discovered my L5 was fragmented into about 20 pieces, and my disc was torn completely in half.
Well my surgery was done May 5th 2000, and i was placed in a full torso brace to limit my bending and such, and i went through post surgey rehab and stuff. BUT my rt leg never fully regained full feeling, i tod my Dr about this and he was like that is normal it will come back in time, he also told me i would be at like 85 to 90% normal again, i knew i couldnt go back to wrestling, but i never figured it would be this bad.
Anyway, after my surgery, i saw him for follow up like i said , and i mentions the leg numbness repeativly, and it went unanswered. so i learn to deal with it, and the constant pain i was still in. The fusion didnt help with the pain or tingling. so since my Dr ignored me i adjusted my life, alot of rest, sitting jobs, and such.
Now we jump ahead to October of 2001, i was working as a supervisor of the college dining hall i lived near. and standing became a huge chore, the pain was coming back full force, the surgery helped a little it never fully went away, but now it was coming back full bore, i could hardly walk, i cryed myself to sleep at night i was in such pain, i got on pain killers, and i eventually lost my job at the dining hall, i then went to work at a food lion just 1 block from my hosue because rent. then in december, on Dec 21st i slipped and took a fall from about 1 foot off the ground, TOTAL Right leg numbness and tremendous pain, i am unable to work, i cant go out harldy, my life has been a living hell.
I have seen 7 doctors in this time. Including the original surgeon and a neurosurgeon he is in practice with, and they both say they cant find why im hurting, but the reaosn thwey cant they wont do a single damn test on me to find otu why. I have been on Hydrocodone, Nortripaline, Neuronton, Methadone, and countless others. and today is Oct 23rd, its a wednesday, and i am in tremendous pain, i could cry if i wasnt fighting so hard to hold it back. my back is on fire all up and down, and my leg is mor eor less dead weight, i am awaiting UVa to call me to see their spine doctor, because according to them i have classic symptoms of a spinal cord injury. My neursurgeon "Kicked" me out of clinc, as there was "Nothing else he could do for me", and i am coming off the methadone, so i am on no pain meds, so i am suffering every minuye of every day, i cant concentrate on my school work( I do distance learning from college) due to my pain level, and life generally sucks. i am gratefull for my family and wonderful fiance who have stood by me.. im just scared my life wil never be the same, because thats what the consensus is from the 7 doctors, i wont ever get better. i regret the fusion and i despise the bastard that did it, with out lookin at my future, he more or less ruined my life, he put a 20 yr old under the knife and drasitcally affected his everyday life, and i hate him for that. please if anyone is goin through something similar please email me at bennyhanna316@yahoo.com. no one in my family can fully understand whats goin on, they try their best God bless their souls, but with out knowing fully its hard to make someone feel better u know.
thank you all
Ben

Hi Ben,
I am so sorry you are going thru such hell. I wish there was something I could do to ease your pain. All I can do is to let you know I understand. Hang in there.
Have you checked into Prolotherapy? I had a herniated disc L5-S1 in 1985. Because of seeing my mother go thru this hell with having had a spinal fusion, I wouldn't let a doctor come near me with a knife. My doctor wanted to operate. I fired him and got another doctor. I have been seeing an osteopath in San Diego, CA who has used Prolo with me and my back is better.
What area do you live in? I think there's a website that gives names of doctors who perform Prolo.
I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Perhaps you will become a leader in the movement to teach Americans the dangers that allopathic medicine and it's monopoly pose to the health and well-being of all of us.
I sincerely hope this helps. Hang in there, Pal!

Hi, Ben.
Another triumph of the allopathic monopoly, eh?
However, unless your surgeon was greatly exacerating your initial lesion, to get you to do the surgery and to magnify how great he was to actually get results from such a disasterous injury (something many surgeons do) you were in terrible trouble before your surgery.
This is just one more reason why every patient MUST keep copies of all their medical records at home for their entire life!!!
You need a copy of the xray study that showed your vertebra "in 20 pieces" and all the clinical records (including the operative reports) of what happened at that time. Get copies of ALL xrays and clinical records associated with all that you have narrated here. They are YOUR records so do not let any of these guys deny them to you. Any doc who refuses you can post an official complaint with their county medical society and if necessary their state licensing board. Normally only the threat will get them to cooperate. Any ethical physician will give you no trouble.
You also need an MRI of what is the current situation. If I were you, I would go to an Osteopathic Orthopedist with your note and all of your records and let us know what he says.
Once you have these documents you will likely be surprised at what you will learn. Until I have that information there is little I can suggest--other than to wear a brace and DO NOT FALL AGAIN!

Since Janurary when i have seen all my doctors, NO ONE has done a test except for an initial CT Milogram which did show the nerve at the L% was damaged in the same area my fusion is. But i can not for any reason get a doctor to do any test on me, its ridiculous. all they wanta do is drug me and sedate me so i dont hurt, but i wanta not hurt from the problem being fixed.
And on the prolotheraphy, i ready you looked into that after what your mom went through, can they do that with the metal implants in my back? or would they have to come out(Ouchie). im in VA BTW if you can point me to somewhere i can read up on it, id really apprechiate it.

Thanks, MRI.
HY is the resident expert on prolotherapy but I would be VERY surprised if any metal would be a contraindication to it.
