I have had two spinal fisions in less than a year at L5-S1
The first was in May 97 using femoral rings which did not take and in April 98 I had the Ray Cage surgery. I had already had one surgery on my back in 92 at the same location. The Ray Cage Surgery was the third and it was performed thru my stomach. After the second surgery I developed extreme pain in my left lower back that spreads
thru my back and into my legs as if I had not had the surgery. After the Ray Cages the pain was still there and continues to be more debilitating each day but Dr Galen Smith of Appalichian Orthopedics says the problem is fixed and can not see any problems on the X-Rays.
I was recently told by an honest Doctor who does pain management and neurology that one out of every thousand people suffer from severe fibrosis after surgery. He advised if early intervention of steroids is started it can be delayed otherwise there is no help except strong pain medication and muscle relaxers. I have had 8 series of injections into my spine trying to ease my suffering but I have been told that is all that can be done because of the dangers.
To all who consider this please no matter how bad the pain is research your options before surgery. If you do have a fusion make sure they go thru your back instead of your stomach.

Thanks, Dan.

First of all, your note tells me that you are aware that surgery does nothing about WHY one has the problem. Unfortunately that means that even with the best case scenario (symptomatic relief following surgery) there are problems. NOW, the person no longer has symptoms to push them to learn why they had the problem and the causes continue unabated.

Look at the link to the archives I have prepared below for the causes.

Walt
