Reading all these posts about others with back problems and pain. I had raythreaded fusion cages put it at L6-S1 (yes L-6 I have an extra vertebrae) in Sep 98. I also had bilateral breaks in the pars articularis along with broad based disc bulge at l-4,l-5. Surgery took twice as long. Doctor was amazed at the arch I had in my back at that level. Anyway follow up care consisted of periodic appointment him telling me fusion would be complete at 3, 6 months. It still isnt. Had ct done in Jan 99. He wanted a bone growth stimulator for me but my insurance turned it down. He thought the rep from the company could fight for me I in turn think the dr should of been fighting for me. Anyway, dr feels my problem had been adequately and appropriately addressed and feels my pain is ingrained on my nervous system. He wants to put me on elavil and neurotin. That leds me to the conclusion that he thinks its in my head. He did nothing about the bulged disk I have, the area of my scar where the drain tube was still hurts I still have pain down my left side and can't even sleep thru the night due to the pain. I am now seeing an md who wants another mri done, an emg, trip to pain managment center and a possible myleogram. On the ct in Jan the radiologist could not see alot of things due to postoperative change, scar tissue, etc. What are my options here? I wish I would of never had this done. At points after surgery the pain was so bad I really wanted to die and the "literature said there was a 92% chance I would have a decrease if not a total eradication of pain". I say to this 'HA". I am angry that I let someone do this to me and now he can't even be honest enough with me to tell me the truth. If I have to live with this pain for the rest of my life, tell me that way I can try to make peace with it and move on. My advice to anyone facing spinal surgery with laminectomy with fixation (rods, raythreaded fusion cages, bak cages) DONTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. It's more than you bargain for. You may be in the very very small percentage that benefit, but you better hope that your guardian angel is with you. I apologize for my attitude to everyone, but anyone with chronic pain knows, realizes and cares that this runs over into every aspect of your life. Thanks, Peggy, for your testimonial.
NOW, it is time to help you!
If you have spent a few hours reading the archives about the link below, you know that most pain clinics are worthless. Worse than worthless when one considers the people who think "been there, done that" when they leave one not helped.
Calll the best one in the world (The originator of the concept--Norman Shealy, MD, PhD) at (417) 865-5940 in Springfield, MO, and ask them for the closest COMPETENT Pain and Stress Treatment Center to you. REMEMBER! A competent P&STC is like a school. You learn how to resolve this. It is not something that they DO to solve this.
As you become pain free, please share your experiences with the BB so others do not have to go through what you have.

Is this the same Norm Shealy, MD, PhD that used to work with Carolyn Myss, the medical intuitive?
And about his and similar practices? Where/How can we hear about the goings-on and success stories and what they're learning and really practicing at such apparently First Class (not completely "conventional") places?
Seems that the places really doing wonderful stuff would have their own web sites, be written up in the papers, etc. etc., Or perhaps am I looking in the wrong places? or expecting that which I ought not expect?

Yep, RHJ!
He da man! He and Carolyn are the founders of the program in which I am participating in Hawaii.
