spinal question

Posted by Dee [252.1114] on July 25, 2004 at 09:45:23:

What area of the spine would cause your ribs and diaphramn to feel lifted up and tight, also having problems with hands going numb, when i look down, i feel a tight pulling thru my right shoulder. I see a chiro, tried to explain this to him, he don't think its anything he is doing. It happens after he adjusts me neck area(he pushes in on the side of your neck, no twisting.
someone help me with this for i can explain it better to him. TY

Hi Dee,

If something feels tight, chances are it is tight muscles. You know, chiropractic moves the bones, but it doesn't always release the muscles. I would suggest you consider also seeing a massage therapist -- perhaps alternating visits between the chiropractor and the massage therapist.

Sounds to me like you need focused massage all around your neck, shoulders, and ribs. Possibly lower back, abdomen, and pelvis, too.

Best wishes,
Jan DeCourtney, CMT

The "looking down" symptoms you describe sound like a lower cervical disc problem. The diaphram/ribs problem could be another situation or an extension of the disc problem.

The first thing I'd do is get another chiropractor. The problem should be getting better, not worse. Especially after getting adjusted.

Hi, Dee.

Bracing.

Listen to DrDave and Happygal.

The actual reason I finally added a massage therapist to my office staff was that the Chiropractor I already had in my office was complaining that his adjustments were not "holding". We decided it was because of bracing and by combining Chiropractic with massage therapy the adjustments held a lot longer and were eventually a lot less necessary.

This IS costochondritis or at least the precurser of it.

If this is REALLY bothersome to you you might consider a Rolfing consult for quick, but temporary (at least 6 months) release.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

TY. I am tired of chiro's-have not had any luck with them. What do i look for-to find a good chiro. Two I have seen did kineoslogy testing(they messed me up real bad)this new one did not do that testing(was doing great with him)than started not holding adjustments and the swelling at base of head and my jaw feels funny and the upper back and tingling problem in arms now. I have told him-he does not think it is anything he is doing.Ugh!

It may not be something he's doing. But he should be doing something ABOUT it.

Don't get me started on kinesiology in chiropractic. Ugh!

Someone who's going to X-ray and specifically locate the problem/dyfunction/misalignment then specifically correct that.

I know it's tough because there are so many "versions". I'd go "interview" a couple and chekc them out. You are hiring them. You are their boss, paying them to help you.

Hi Dee,

Was it a full body massage? If so, wrong type of massage or wrong therapist. The massage you need would be called "deep tissue massage" and would be focused specifically on the tightest muscles in your neck, shoulders, etc.

Best wishes,

Hi Dee,

Nerves can be pinched by tight muscles, causing the exact same sensations of tingling and numbness.

Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks, Dee.

If you recall, I have said many times that it takes at least 3 deep, total body massages a week, for 2 handrunning weeks, to do anything significant, or even temporarily lasting, about bracing.

Where do you live?

Walt
