Poss. failed fusion

Posted by Living with the PAin on January 10, 2000 at 15:16:33:

My husband may have a failed fusion. A radiologist says there is no evidence of a fusion on the xray, the doc. says this may or may not be and the only way to find out is to explore the surgery...L5-s1 fusion with ray cages. Constant pain and he requires meds to get up each day. ALso wondering about the effects of nsaids and fusion..
What options do we have? surgery again is not the most exciting prospect obviously.

Hello,
I am 38 years old, female, and wondering if mine is a failed fusion also. I had BAK fusion(cages) at l-5 & s-1 on Feb. 11 1999. I still have major pain and the doctor said the cages haven't moved and there is probably permanent nerve damage. No solutions for that! I am so tired of hurting, as I'm sure your husband is also.
Sometimes I wonder how much the doctors really know. Feel free to e-mail me if you would like, it will be interesting to see what Dr. Stoll has to say.
Take care and good luck...... Hang in there!-karen

Hi, Karen and "living with pain".

All of those options are discussed exhaustively on the archives for Spinal Conditions. Spend a fes hours on the link I have prepared for you below and THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Even the surgeons KNOW that surgery does nothing about WHY this condition is persisting.

Re: Poss. failed fusion (Sorry. I am having trouble with my links.) Just go to the archives.

Dear Living,

You are already at the very best place to resolve this problem. Medications have NOTHING to do with healing a fusion. As a matter of fact, in the long run, most medications for pain actually inhibit healing of any bony chronic problem.

Until you are ready to spend the time learning what is offered on this 'site, you will likely continue with the problem.

Walt
