Neck Pressure after Anterior Cervical Discectomy - A FollowUP

Hello Dr. Stoll,

I would just like to say thank you for setting me on the path to healing a few months ago. Here is the follow-up that I promised.

I underwent Neck Surgery 16 months ago. Fussing two levels in my cervical spine. Four months after surgery I was left with pain (much decreased after surgery) and pressure at the front of my throat that did not subside.

You recommend two books 1) The Relaxation Response 2)Mega Brain. Both books were excellent and I set about implementing many of the teachings in the books. Through those books I happened across another book 3) The Pain Cure by Dr.Dharma Singh Khalsa. What a gift this book was for me - knowledge truly is power!

Here are the things that have helped me most:

1) Exercise - the key here is 40 minutes per day to keep the Seritonin levels up. I have always exercised, just not long enough.
2) Yoga - my choice of relaxation techniques, but added benefits include retraining muscles and nerves irritated by surgery (after surgery my left arm was left feeling as if it had been put on backwards).
3) Time - Time to heal. I was in much too big a hurry. I did not have an understanding and therefore respect for what my body had been put through both before and after surgery. I just needed to relax and let my body heal.

I still have a long way to go. Stress plays way too big a role in my life and is the biggest contributor to any Neck pain I still have (the pressure is no longer constant and is gone for days at a time). But the good news is I am much improved since last we spoke.
