Hi Doc,
I was in a car accident 4/98. I was rearened by 2 vehicles while stopped in traffic. I have recently been to a nueroligist who referred me to a neurosurgan. I have had an MRI and electrodiognastic test. The MRI showed C5 & C6 as the problem area. The disc is bulging and dried out spinal stenosis and bone spurs. The MRI showes how the disc has pushed towards the spinal cord and fluids are being cut off. Also the 2 bones are discolored. He believes arthritis may be setting in.
I will be sceduled for a color MRI for more details. He also suggested a mamogram since I have not had one before. He would like rule out cancer. Since it does run on my mothers side.
He sugessted diskectomy, with a plate since I am a smoker.
Is there any other way other then surgery to correct this condition?
I am an active person,39 yr.old female. I work with heavy equipment on contruction sites. Never broke a bone or had sticthes. Basically very healthy my whole life until the accident. Please do you have any suggestions? I have a future appointment with the neurosurgon to find out more. Although he did say the surgery was up to me. Problem is I find it difficult to live with migrains and the pains throughout my body. Affects mostly my left side. Please let me know. And yes I have read the information throughout you site.

Chris, why don't you look at abc.com 20/20 program for a week ago. Doctors who specialize in cervical spinal stenosis talk about the latest findings.

Hello Sally,
Thank for replying so quickly. I did see the program, it was good. I was diagnosed 2 days after the show. So far everything sounds positive. I have yet to here or see any drawbacks to this operation. No one seems to talk about the long term effect. I saw the plate that is suppose to be put in. I notice that there doesn't seem to be any flexability. Is it true that maybe 10 to 15 years later I will have to have the surgery again? I understand 7% more preasure is put on the other disks and that eventually a plate covering 4 bones may have to be added.
If there is an alternative way of fixing the problem I would like to look into it. I've also heard that surgery should be avoided if possible. Although I will have the surgery if this is the best way to handle my situation. Also this is a workmans comp case. Which has created more stress to the situation.
A family member sent me a magnetic neckless to help with the pain. It does something but I'm not sure what. I actually had to take it off after a 1 1/2 days because the pain was everywhere at once. Several hours later I put it on again. Will this neckless creat any problems that I'm not aware of?
Thanks again.

Hi, Jamie.
Still active though we have had some difficulty with the functional parts of the system lately: me and my 'puter. Yesterday it was a non-functional ISP.)

Hi, Chris.
Thanks for taking the time to read the information about arthritis, spinal, SR and stress before asking your questions. Since you have, I can start your explanation at a much higher level.
First, doing the things recommended for this kind of problem will not hurt and will at least give you a better post-surgical success rate than you would have had without them. Second, the fact that your surgeon is recommending a much more radical surgery "because you are a smoker" should tell you how many things in your environment make a difference in your healing rate and deterioration rate. If you do not stop, your % cure rate will be less.
