I did look in you archives which is why I asked your recommendation for some help in my area.
But now I have a different problem. I went to the surgeon last week. He says that a posterior fusion is not just for pain control-which may or may not work anyway. He says that the real reason for the surgery is that if I go around with an inadequately fusion, that there is a 50% chance of the metal plate he put in my neck in breaking, screws coming loose etc. This is a dangerous situation and would require a big surgry to fix. Going in from front to get the metal out, which is a complicated and risky surgery. And then also having to do the postrior fusion, using more of my own bone from the hip (which is incredibly painful). Do you have any commenton this Dr. Stoll? Is that 50% thing a scare tactic? Or has anyone else out there been in this situation and could give some advice? I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to have to make a decision soon. Thanks

Dear Meighan.

Your surgeon on the spot is likely right. This is the problem with not resolving problems like this PRIOR to surgery. Now that you have the metal in there you are stuck with whatever conventional medicine has to offer.

HOWEVER, it is still not too late to do those things since at the very least they would contribute to your not having recurrnce post-op and increase the chances that the surgery would be successful.

Let us know what happens. Don't you wish that you had known what is in the archives BEFORE you had the surgery?

Actually, it is the surgeon's responsibility to tell you about ALL of your options prior to surgery. The problem seems to be "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

I had an ACDC (own bone) and plating of C6-7 on 1/10/2000.Although the arm pain is gone I still have moderately severe back pain and in last 2 months have developed debilitating headaches. As of now, the bone graft has not fused. The surgeon is recommending a posterior fusion if it doesn't fuse and I still have pain 1 yr post-op. And yet he tells me that even if that fusion took I may still have pain. I don't have much faith in more surgery. Can you recommend a good pain clinic or MD in the area (Boulder Co.) who may be able to help me?I personally don't care if its an MD, I'm just thninking about insurance coverage.
Thanks,Meighan

Hi, Meighan.

How much time have you spent in the archives about spinal problems? It is too bad that you could not have had that knowledge before your surgery.

Use the search engine for how to find a pain center.

Let us know how you do and, once you have spent a few hours on the archives, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt
