Time and therapy just as effective as surgery for ruptured discs as reported in the New York Times

Is this supposed to be news?

That was an interesting article.
I thought surgery always has been a last resort and that ruptured disks usually heal on their own though, so I don't get it.

Thanks for the posting. I will send this to my step daughter who is having this problem.
I read someplace someone with this problem should up their water intake.
I haven't checked the Archives here as of yet.
Thanks again. I am sure this article will at least give my step daughter some mental relief.

The problem being that NEITHER approach does anything for WHY the person had a herniated disc.
They should compare surgery and PT to hitting yourself in the head with a frying pan.
There are cases where surgery is necessary and there are people who got over disc problems while under PT(more despite the PT that because of it) but the vast majority of people who undergo surgery could and should avoid it.
Fortunately, neurosurgeons in general are MUCH MUCH MUCH better at admitting this now than they were even 5 years ago.

Thanks Dave
I was hoping you would reply here.

Thanks, Alan.
Just as I have been saying for many years now. This finding will be strongly resisted by the orthopedic and neurological surgeons whose basic income is dependent upon this kind of surgery!

Would this apply to cervical herniations like the one I have? My chiropracter went into my neck this last time I went and he said there was nothing misaligned in there. I was having severe pain in my entire trapezius (and referring areas) area from top to bottom. Even to the touch. I have very deep tissue massage done on it about 2 hours ago and she thinks that will remove it.
I'm wondering if after a year, a follow up MRI will show if the disc is completely back in?
The other part is I can't mentally get over it. I'm scared to death doing any upper body at the gym.

As we've discussed before, there are a few different things that can bulge a disc. Abnormal pressure can come from a couple different sources, including trauma. If there is nothing misaligned in your neck and everything else is addressed then it should be healed by now.
The muscle you have tightening up is doing that for a reason. Find out the reason.

How would I do that? Find out the reason...
I don't have any "disc" symptoms much. I guess on some days I have some aching and pain but the initial symptoms (severe pain in the left arm especially when looking up) stopped after about 2 months.
I think I am so tense when I lift weight that I probably hurt my upper back and neck because I'm so worried about the disc.
