Can a Bulging Disc Reside Itself

Posted by Patti Harris on May 11, 2001 at 22:09:39:

Dear Dr. Stoll,

I have been diagnosed through a MRI, That I have a mild
diffuse bulging in the annulus fibrosis. I had severe
pain for almost five weeks. The last week it has
subsided. My surgeon has recommended a micro-disectomy
surgery to get rid of the bulge and thus take pressure
off the sciatic nerve.

My Question is: Does a bulging disc heal itself,
does the bulge retract on its own?
Or is Surgery the only way to rid
the body of the bulge?

Hi, Patti.

I had 5 similar discs 25 years ago and THEY all healed once I got rid of MY bracing.

This message is a bit far down on the list so not sure if anyone will read ...

I like that comment from Dr. Stoll "to a hammer everything looks like a nail" :)

But seriously thou; IMO I'd try some conservative approaches ... chiropractic, physical therapy, nutrition, perhaps meditation etc ...

I like how you stated it; "there is a bulging in the annulus fibrosis ... and then the doc says... Hey I can fix that for you; I can just cut it out :). Its just the 'big technical' word followed by the 'primative' I fix; I take out with knife thing.

Belive me I doubt there will be anyting "micro" about a guy taking a knife to your disc. You mentioned nothing about pain etc or loss of function ...

So I would again suggest go for the treatment that leaves you in once piece; if you need more then heck go for the knife.

Sean
