Dear Doctor; In Dec 1998 I had a laminectomy of L4, L5. I had r footdrop due to nerve root irratation. Today I suffer with severe cramps in my r foot and r thigh. I also have numbness of my r foot and twitching and jerking movements of my leg and foot. I still have bad pain in my lower back. also pain in my r hip. My Dr says there is nothing I can do because I have nerve damage. Do you know anything I can do to make my pain and cramps more tolerating? Help!

i was in the auto insurance business for 15 yars , i saw a lot of herniated disc injuries/surgeries, i swear it seems i rarely heard of anyone getting better due to surgery, and a lot of the time they ended up worse. id like to know what the % of success is, id bet not high. skilled relaxation helps any pain problem, you may want to go to a professional(good) hypnotherapist to start with.

My back history is not unlike yours...(2 different laminectomies..foot drop due to nerve compression pre/post, now resolved, surgery and etc.)
Until I found an MD (Psyiatrist/Pain Specialist and Neurologist) who believed that being pain FREE was possible I too heard about permanent damage...maximum improvement...live with it...etc. I am active and refused to accept a life limited by numb feet, radiating pain post surgery, bladder numbness, loss of mobility and chronic pain. I was lucky to be referred to a pain MD who practices complementary medicine along with SOP.
The neural injections I received in my spine IMMEDIATEY returned feeling into both feet. I had one more neural series and remain free of numbness, burning into my legs and feet today. I regained equal strength in both feet, ankles (even tho' I was told by my surgeon it likely was perm. nerve damage) I had more neural therapy (injections) to strengthen my weak pelvic floor ...this...in conjunction with eliminating a patched tooth (broken in my MVA...mercury leached into my system which showed up via kinesology) completely (kinesology indicated it was affecting my bladder) straightened out my bladder problems .
(I felt the need to pee all the time and had difficulty
voiding)
Pro-lo therapy has taken the place of a three level fusion in my c spine and I'm doing really well. The pain that I do have is manageable and some days I have none. I work out, hard, every other day...do Mackenzie back exercises AND feel great.
I tried every avenue prior to re-thinking my approach to spinal healing. Incredible frustration, pain and learned disbelief in surgical remedy led me to try a new approach and ultimately...pretty impressive healing.
Lots of my MDs. patients are as enthusiastic as I am...because they never thought they could/would be pain free and had been given up on by orthopods and more unenlightened clinicians.
If you can get yourself into a place where you refuse to accept living with pain (this means giving it all one more SHOT with all the self motivation and effort involved) I promise you that you can heal more than you might currently believe you can AND elimate alot if not all of your problems.
Try to find a good pain specialist/psiatrist...PT or chiropractor or Mylofascial Specialist...learn about Neural therapies, pro-lo Therapy and alternative treatments...They actually work...they encourage the body; guide it into accomodating the dysfunction and healing.
I hope that you have luck AND that you DO not accept the limitations that MDs who are not familiar with new therapies (or don't look at our bodies holistically) place upon you. They do not know what to do...so...they are stymied...
my best,
Martha

Hi, Faith.
Listen to Martha and jt (Thanks, guys!)
It would have been nice if you could have read all of the archives about spinal conditions BEFORE you had the surgery.
At least, then, you would have known what to expect and you might even have avoided the surgery like I did.
That information is STILL your best option!
Let us know what you learn.
