Dr Stoll,
I underwent an L5/S1 micreendoscopic discectomy july 10, 20001 (4 weeks ago). Prior to surgery, I was having extreme numbness and tingling down the left leg, particularly with sitting. I was only able to sit for about 5 minutes until the pain became unbearable. I was diagnosed July 2nd with a large L5/S1 paracentral disc herniation, therefore requiring surgery. I had been through Physical therapy and medications, rest, etc. with no relief prior to surgery. My question is this...I am still presenting with the same amount of tingling, numbness down the left leg. I can still only sit for 10 minutes. I have undergone a repeat MRI which shows a new "probable small left disc protrsion". Am I expecting too much as far as healing times are concerned? I was under the impression that the surgery would eliminate the radicular symptoms because the pressure has been removed from the nerve. The doctor just keeps saying "give it time to heal", but this is very frustrating to me because I have not been able to sit down in about 2 months. Is this normal????

According to Walt, all back surgery results can be statistically divided evenly into three results. One third of all back surgery patients will get better, one third will remain the same, and one third will be in worse pain than before.

Hi, Aimee.
Listen to Lincoln.
It seems to me that you are destined to be in the middle third.
What have you learned from the archives about spinal problems? If I were you, I would get Rolfed, learn and practice SR & go to the library and read up on Alexander Technique or Feldenkrais--the very things that you could have done to prevent the surgery.
Let us know what you learn.
Walt
