Miraculous Magnesium

Posted by
Rodney on July 24, 2003 at 21:41:52:

I'll try to be as brief as possible, but I've recently had a miraculous experience with magnesium (and EFAs). I'm the one with the severe facial tics, who has spent literally hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on "stuff" to treat them, 99% ineffective.

The past month or so has been exhausting: I developed a new twitch, this one being rapid forceful blinking of the eyes. It was scaring me, because if I did it while driving, I would "blank out" for the little 3-second "seizure". Sometimes I would stop chewing food if one hit me. Not to mention, my brain felt like it was working triple time 24/7. It was exhausting, I lost all desire to do just about anything (even go to Walmart, my home away from home). I even avoiced conversations with people, because I would do all this blinking while I was talking! I was convinced I had TARDIVE DYSKINESIA, although I had never been on psychiatric drugs. Yet I had every one of the symptoms (talk about a debilitating disease!). Is it possible to develop this condition without the drugs???

Anyway, I did a search on here for TARDIVE and found a post from Kyra about her son Nick, who, although only a child, sounded like he had MY brain. Dr. Walt advised basically a whole food diet, micronutrients, and EFAs. I was so stressed and exhausted, I took a handful of Magnesium Orotate and EFAs (and a couple of Vitamin E's) at bedtime. The next morning, I woke up, and my brain didn't feel so tired. I was still twitching a little, but it wasn't that exhausting, compulsive twitching of the last month. I took a handful of magnesium and EFAs with me to work, and kinda rationed them out through the day. Was pretty tired last night, but today I woke up and was like a new man. I felt so calm, hardly blinked at all, and only mild twitches. In just 48 hours! All thanks to Dr. Stoll's advice. Hopefully, he can finish my success story (which is now running kinda long...sorry.)

1. Not to sound ungrateful, but if the mag/EFAs diminished my tics/blinking, why didn't it make them go away altogether? Not enough time? Not enough supplements? Need other minerals as well?

2. What caused this whole tic thing? I consider it a "brain thing". Did a chemical incigarette smoke (light smoker) cause this mag deficiency? I've heard formaldehyde is in cigarettes! Or was it just my individual brain or body/mind relationship. Any other ideas about my situation would be most welcome.

3. And finally: Kyra, if you see this message, I hope you try these supplements (I have a feeling you already have). The only thing worse than experience these exhausting, debilitating "seizures" (when the doctor tells you you're completely healthy) is to see someone you love having them, and not be able to help them.

Thank you good people, expecially Dr. Walt, for letting me share my story. I'm not out of the woods yet, but I feel like I'm on the road to recovery.

Hi Rodney,

Congratulations!

I don't know the answer to your questions, but I've been having a similar wonderful time taking magnesium, not for tics but for a similar nervous system type of thing -- tight neck muscles and insomnia.

In my case, I also need to take B complex at the same time as the magnesium. It seems like they work better together.

I'd be interested in hearing how it goes should you be willing to try some B complex (100's balanced) to see if it helps the magnesium.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi Rodney, its always a pleasure to read a testamony like yours. Thank you for sharing!! I'm just wondering if you started doing skilled relaxation to aide in your healing process. Sounds like most of your problem might have been chemical, but I wonder if some of it was caused from stress?

Thanks, Rodney.

In order of your questions:
1. Not long enough to know.
2. Cigarettes cause anyone's bodymind to need more micronutrients. Your extra need is probably genetic but there is still nothing that can be done about that except to follow LeChatelier's Principle and take more of whatever you need. You can, however, stop smoking.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks, Barb.

I hope Rodney reads this. His tendency, with such early results, will be to wait until the symptoms return before considering this.

Thanks, Happygal.

Of course B complex vitamins are cofactors with magnesium.

Thank you, Dr. Stoll, for the tongue lashing. Just FYI, I have been practicing Skilled Relaxation, not to the point of biofeedback and not monitoring alpha waves, but at least attempting it (and knowing what to expect). The results, I realize, will probably not be as immediate as the supplements, but more effective in the long run.

If I have generated "quick fix" expectations in anyone, that wasn't my attention. However, if you had been dealing with the SEVERE symptoms I have been dealing with for YEARS, I think you might look a little more favorably on my immediate reprieve. (SMILE) And also, I am just always amazed at how readily my body responds when I give it what it needs.

But thanks again for the tongue lashing, Dr. Stoll! You've got me pegged!

Thanks, Walt!

Do you know if there are any other co-factors for magnesium? I feel that something is still missing in my body and I haven't figured out what it is yet.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Rodney, whether its a long term healing, or short term, its still GREAT to read about. Its amazing how a supplement, diet change or SR can have such an affect on a persons body.

I've had a very minor recurring twitch in my left eye for about a year or so. What I did is just double my multivitamin doze and it went away. I am taking about %30 DV of magensium which is in my multivite but it still fixed it. I don't feel stressed in any way but there's a lot of different definitions of stress so who can say.
I bet SR would probably help too but who wants to wait 6 months to a year for the results??

Rodney,

6-12 months seems like a long time but before you know it 6-12 months later you'll wish you would have started it 6-12 months ago!

Happygal..

Do you take magnesium orotate? Or another kind? I got some elemental magnesium oxide but I haven't tried it yet because I haven't had time to research the best magnesium. I want to start it for the same reason you are taking it - tight muscles.

thanks, Mindy

Hi Mindy,

Walt recommends glycinate, orotate, or aspartate. You might also take a B100 complex with it at the same time, because they are co-factors. I find that I feel much better taking them together.

The oxide probably won't do much for you, it is said to not be very absorbable.

Good luck!
Best wishes,
Happygal

I didn't realize how much better the magnesium works when you take a little bit of MANGANESE with it! I forgot to take manganese ONE DAY and some of my old jittery symptoms came back. So I doubled up on magnesium/EFAs. THEN I remembered and took my managanese! WOW! It was like my metabolism kicked into overdrive. I started sweating, got a boost of energy, and blinking stopped for a LONG time!

So glad I figured out what a lot of people already knew!

OK, I'll shut up now! SMILE

Do you take flax oil for the EFA's, or something else?
And what dosage of manganese and magnesium did you take?

I would say its just too soon, 48 hours, to expect a cure just yet. Give it time, and keep smiling as you get better and better!

Thanks, Happygal.

These cofactors are covered exhaustively in Mildred Selig's book about magnesium and in Jean Durlach's "Magnesium in Clinical Practice".

Your library can find you a copy. I would have to look them up too.

Namaste`

Hi, Martin.

If you have studied this subject you knowthat within a few weeeks of effective SR you are getting more hours back than it is costing you and that is just the beginning of the benefits in hours. This is just an excuse just as the symptoms are just a warning of worse to come.

Juat the fact that you "do not have an hour to spare" in your busy life is a pretty good indication of at least part of what is going on.

Walt

Good point. Can't argue with that.
You really think that a facial tick due to magnesium defficiency is a warning of worse things to come though? If I correct that nutritionally would that still be the case? I find that hard to believe.

Thanks, Martin.

You MAY have to combine SR with the magnesium since the very most common cause is a combination of both. The only way you will become a believer is to do a therapeutic trial (Does it work?) The only reason to try the magnesium first is because it works faster and is easier than the SR.

Converted skeptics are wonderful!
