A Swirling Mind

Posted by Zara on August 04, 2003 at 09:25:15:

I have had a most trying day today, from certain events that took place. I cant seem to let go of the tension, even though I have sat for my meditation, my mind keeps whirling around these negative thoughts from the day. How I could have done things better, why I did certain things the way I did etc etc.
I tend to grab onto an event, and my mind just replays it, and repeats it over and over, until I end up with a throbbing headache. Like i cant let it go for some odd reason., even when I want to. I have talked it through with someone else, hoping that would ease it off,but it doesnt seem to have relieved the anxiety.
Any helpful ideas how to stop my mind from replaying the bad events of the day? I am finding it quite draining on my energy.

Hi Zara,

There will be days when you cannot quiet the mind. It's okay. Of course, that shouldn't happen all the time, just occasionally.

Sometimes I take out pen and paper to write down the things I'm thinking about, so I can come back to them later.

You might also consider getting a cassette or CD with some progressive relaxation instructions. Anything that will change your focus to what is happening in your body in the moment will take your mind off your thoughts.

Try also taking a long walk before you sit to do SR. This can be really effective because it pulls the energy out of the mind into the body.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi, Zara.

Listen to Happygal.

This is called the "monkey mind" and everyone has trouble with that to a greater or lesser extent. That is one of the things SR techniques are for: getting in control of the monkey mind.

You might find learning the Sedona method helpful. It focuses on learning how to let go of feelings. There was some discussion about this a while back, so as well as the link below you might like to look at the archives.

Sometimes if things get out of hand the best way is to get into some heavy exercise. Remember it is fight or flight. You did not fight, so maybe it is time for some pseudo flight. Good exercise can sometimes busy the body so insights may come as well.

Be well,

Yep, things got out of hand, and went from bad to worse. calm and relaxed shoulda been the way I handled myself, in an ideal world of course. :)
Thing is once my mind gets a hold of something, it wont let go easily. got a monkey on my back!.
thanks for tip about vigorous exercise. thats my agenda.
