I tried doing SR sitting up and I was really having a hard time with it. Lately, I have tried doing SR lying down and I think I might be getting closer to the state where I need to be. Any opinions?
Thanks

If you aren't falling asleep, it's fine.

True, but (and it sounds silly) but it's harder to tell if you're falling asleep. :)

Hi Jim,
Maybe so, still the spoon trick can be used lying down. Just place hand so the spoon will fall on the floor if dropped. Perhaps have a place setting for four ready so as not to have to bend down to retrieve the spoon. :)
Be well,

Hi wondering,
Try semi-reclined.
Best wishes,

Hi Wondering,
I always do my SR lying down (unless I'm in the car--not driving, of course). I don't worry about whether it fits anyone else's rules or not. It works for me, whereas sitting, or any other position, does not. I don't have anything to sit on that has a high back, and can only be completely relaxed and pain-free when I'm lying on the bed with my neck and knees supported.
I use the big spoon trick (actually the small flashlight trick) by holding it vertically with my hand on my hip. When it falls over and hits me in the leg, I know I've dozed off.
Hope this helps,
Nutmeg

As long as you dont fall asleep its fine. But to my knowledge if you do meditation, sitting with your spine straight (with a support to your back) is the most recommended. Yes sitting is initially hard, but you will need a lot of patience and practice.
In my own experience I used to be comfortable lying down during my SR. But after my initiation with shoonya meditation, I started doing my meditation sitting with my spine straight and have seen a lot of benifits.
In yogic science maha shivratri is considered one of the most auspicious days. Shivaratri is prescribed for the fourteenth night of the dark half of the month, the night previous to the New Moon when the moon suffers from total blackout. The shivratri in the month of magha is called magha shiv ratri.
On the night of maha shivratri, its prescribed to keep your spine straight as there is natural upsurge of energy in all human beings. So sitting and keeping your spine straight that night in itself will maximise your energy buildup.
The same happens when you meditate, your energy starts to expand when you meditate and if your spine is straight, it helps the bodys energy field to expand faster. This is the energy that heals you.
Sorry I dont have enough knowledge about the science behind keeping the spine straight and energy expansion. But I know it helps.
Hope this helps.
