TroubleShooting SR

Posted by Bliss on October 27, 2003 at 09:37:00:

If you are having problems going deep in your meditations, this is what I have found has made a huge difference to my sessions.

I practise Centerpointe at times, but mostly now, I will practise Mantra meditation, and every now and then throw in a Centerpointe session for variety.

I go through a muscular relaxation process first. So basically, I relax all muscles starting with toes to my head. I first breath in deeply and gently, hold my breath, contract the muscle, then exhale and at the same time, quckly release the contraction.
After I finish this process (which takes about a min) I settle into my meditation practise, be it Centerpointe or Mantra Meditation.

If you want to try this, make sure you don't contract the muscle too tight, as you don't want to end up with a muscle cramp or anything. :) You don't have to tense too hard, so don't get carried away.

I have found that it puts me into Alpha much quicker, and I stay there longer with very little effort.

I also experience the subtle, positive aftereffects from my meditation throughout the day. It's so important to hit the Alpha state to get max. benefit on all levels.

Hi Bliss,

How do you know when you are in alpha? Do you have biofeedback?

I have never had biofeedback.

I have been considering it as of late though, just for curiousity sake. I have to take a look in the archives as to where I could purchase one of those machines from to do it myself.

HOw do I know I am in Alpha?

I just know! :) Sorry can't put it into words very well. I'll try my best tho.

I have meditated since I was 18 years old, and I know when I am hitting it and when I am not.

I get extremely relaxed; everything slows down. My breathing becomes barely perceptible, my thoughts slow down, I start to lose sensation in hands and feet, all my muscles become slack, my body becomes heavy like I am sinking into the chair. Any noise interruptions such as phone ringing, workmen outside etc don't affect my concentration.

I have always been able to go very deep in my meditations. But since using the muscle contraction/release technique, has really helped to quickly put me into alpha. Before doing this, my body would take several mins to get there and fully relax, but with this technique, it's almost instant once I start into my meditation.

This is exactly what my biofeedback instructor taught--the muscle contraction/relaxation process from toe to forehead before meditation. Good show!

It gets me into alpha much quicker and easier. I actually got it from a psychic development circle I am attending. They always start off each meditation with this process.

It's interesting because in the group, I find my meditation is very strong and deep. I think it's the accumulated energy from the group that makes it so much easier to slide into deep meditation.
