I just need a hug :) and some support

Posted by George on November 18, 2003 at 18:55:32:

I mastered insomnia and have been sleeping like a champ. I am so relaxed it's amazing. I am doing SR and changing my thought process. Then last night I had this fear thought come up early in the evening of "what if the insomnia comes back". I felt like this was my "last chance" to overcome it. I guess that feeling was with me more than I realized upon going to sleep, because I suddenly became afraid and was up half the night trying to calm myself down again. My self esteem was somewhat injured in the morning because it's hard to understand sometimes how these thoughts get the better of me and many others. I know insomnia comes from fearing not being able to sleep, so I have overcome this... only to be betrayed by another thought... that I can hopefully overcome?

Have you tried affirmations when you can't sleep? Perhaps something like, "I sleep deeply and awaken refreshed." Or what about this one: "The quality of my sleep gets better and better."

Or, when you can't sleep, how about praying, like a child, "God bless Sissy, Mom, Dad, the President, my Congressman, etc." Sometimes my list gets really long. When I am really having a hard time going to sleep, I even include the Clintons (believe me, I'm desperate when I reach them on the list).

These are tricks I use when I'm having a tough time going to sleep. Plus, with prayers, I feel like I'm actually doing something positive.

Anyway, I think it's probably an anomaly and you're going to sleep wonderfully tonight and tomorrow and every single night from hereon.

Hi George:

I get insomnia too, once in a while. If I feel particularly agitated, I take 3 capsules of valerian and read in bed until I fall asleep. If I'm still not asleep after an hour or so, I take melatonin.

By the way, I need a hug too. Here's one from me to you:-)

Hi George,

Guess where I got my name from? I haven't been sleeping well for a long time and one night I heard an owl on the tree ouside my door, puff, I am a Night Owl. Anyway, I do similar thing as Philly. I drink a cup of Valerian tea, try to read or watch a show then I lie down flat, take some deap breaths and then hold my breath as long as I can. After that I try to breathe slowly and regularly and think of something pleasant like a trip to Hawaii or winning a lottery :-)
Anyway, here is your BIG HUG. Can I have one?
Good luck!

Hi George,

Here's a hug. <>

So your problem here isn't really insomnia, it's fear. When you are afraid, you are not relaxed.

If it were me, I would try to figure out what exactly fear does to my body. Then I would learn how to keep my body from doing that.

It was only a thought that caused your fear. So, find a way to change your thought. For example, when this type of thing happens to me, I start telling myself "My mind is relaxing," and I stop thinking (not only the fearful thought, but I stop thinking altogether).

I hope this gives you something to work with.

Best wishes,
Happygal

After reading the responses I had to go back and reread your post to make sure I understand the problem. So your problem is anxiety, which is resulting in insomnia, rather than just plain ol' run-of-the-mill insomnia, right?

Did you try practicing your SR? That's what relieves ALL of my anxiety and anxious thoughts, not to mention gets me right off to sleep. :)

Here's a big cyberhug. < >

Wow, all of these women readily giving hugs. While you are at it, I'm desperate for something that will really help me block out the jungle cries so that I can sleep like a hibernating bear...

All of your thoughts were really helpful. I slept again last night and fell asleep quickly. Thank you. I have been practicing SR and something interesting happened last night. I was so relaxed-- even hours after SR-- that I was able to CHOOSE not to worry and to CHOOSE to be confident and trust myself. SR is such a powerful tool. I also liked the FEAR acronym... and thank you for pointing out that I don't have insomnia, but a fear of insomnia. :) I think I am still on the healing path... thanks to the hugs.
