I have read everything on this website about SR, and I am still confused!! Can someone please give me a step-by-step example as to how to begin?

Julie,
I was in the same place as you a couple of months ago. For me, I have found that investing in a CD that induces the alpha and theta brain waves has worked amazingly well.
I bought the BrainWave Suite for $30, which includes 4 CD's, and the one called "Relaxation & Meditation" is great.
I also bought Centerpointe, but it is very pricey at around $150 (?), something like that, can't remember the exact price. Then there are 12 higher levels for Centerpointe which you can purchase for around $250 per level, over several years, or some just stay at the first couple of levels. Very expensive! Read the archives to see if you think it's worth it for you.
But the BrainWave Suite is a really easy way to begin with SR without investing a lot of money.
YOu need earphones with either of these methods.
I'm sure others on the board will have other advice, so pick what seems best for you!
Gook luck,
Sapphire

Another option is the Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook. You might be able to find this at your library, on Amazon.com (sometimes used copies are available), or at your local bookstore. This book will give you lots of options of different techniques to try. Ultimately, you just have to pick the one that you like the best.
While you're waiting for the book, you could try some very basic breathing exercises. Go to a quite, darkened room and close your eyes. Just focus on your breath coming in and out of your nose. If you notice that you are thinking about something else, just gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Hi Julie,
I would recommend that you look for "The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook" -- there's a description on the main page of this site under "Health Book List". It really helped me in the beginning.

SR is just skilled relatation - and it's the boards catchphrase for ANY meditation-ish activity.
Anything you do do induce a meditative state would help you.
Locally, I bet you could find a natural pharmacy or organic produce store who has a bulliton board of locals who do this... that's a great way to start.

Does the type of skilled relaxtion matter? For example, I am very relaxed praying and reading the bible. Does this constitute as the same?

I think Dr. Stoll would recommend getting "tested" in this state to see if you are reaching alpha brainwaves, which is when the body releases the stored stress.

Hi Julie,
I think you are having similar questions about SR when I first decided to start it. "This meditation stuff is kind of weird".
We'll first there is obviously nothing wrong with breathing techniques, I just found it was hard to do 20 minutes of breathing techniques with out getting distracted.
Second, meditation is mentioned in the Bible: "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; MEDITATE on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything that is written in it." Joshua 1:8
Meditation just means focused thought. So if your prayer time is focused (either on something specific you were shown in your bible reading, or waiting on the spirit) Then your prayer is probably effective. Just remember to be in this state for 20mins. check the glossary for the relaxation responce too... you'll notice there is a difference between feeling relaxed and being in this state of relaxation.
Also don't be afraid to try some of the other techniques mentioned, if your nervous about something just say a prayer that God will be with you during the experience and that he will keep you safe and aware of any dangers.

Julie,
Listen to Carol D.
Prayer is one of the most effective ways to reach the SR level and statistically the prayer is much more effective if the relaxation response is reached during prayer.
There is NOTHING "weird" about meditation techniques. The Bible talks about Jesus's meditations all the time.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.

If that NOTHING "weird" comment was direct at me, that was kind of the point I was trying to make. I was saying many Christians get nervous about "meditation". Although I was commenting that meditating is mentioned in the bible. I'm not actually sure if the bible directly says Jesus meditated (I can't think of a verse of the top of my head, and it's not in my mini concordence)... but I'm sure some of the prayer described in the Gospels are representing meditative prayers.
I personally have a problem with certain meditation techniques like self-hypnosis... perhaps naively. Regardless I only suggest praying to God to keep you safe more so you won't spend your time worrying about whether God approves of what your doing. Basically you should be able find some form of SR that you can be comfortable with spiritually, and remember to check if you can are reaching the relaxation responce in prayer... and that you remain in prayer at least 20 minutes twice a day. Then you will be healthy and will probably have received alot of insight through the holy spirit.
