SR

Posted by ani [333.18] on March 02, 2004 at 06:41:22:

Dear Dr.Stoll

I am practicing Skilled relaxation for a year now. There are periods that I feel better and periods that some symptoms come back.
I feel that despite my efforts I cannot reach yet the Alpha State. I have tried several methods contained in the Relaxation Workbook, plus tapes and CDs from BrainSync.
For biofeedback testing I use a GSR2 which is not giving convincing results.
Is there anything else I can do to make myself into the Alpha State?
I think this is the important point as after devoting myself to healthy diet and regular and mild exercise, I conclude that most of what is happening to me is due to stored stress and the vulnerability to it.

Thank you.

Hi ani,

Are you doing your SR two times a day? (When I started, I couldn't reach alpha during my morning session -- only in the afternoon session because my body was calmer at that time of day.) You might try doing your sessions at different times of the day and see if the timing makes any difference.

Also, try doing some exercise before doing SR. I find it is sometimes easier to slip into the alpha state that way.

A few other thoughts come to mind: try getting some massage or the rolfing series and see if that relaxes your body enough to help you achieve the brainwaves.

Also just persist. Don't give up. Did you read the glossary entry for the "relaxation response"?

Are you totally off caffeine?

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Jan DeCourtney, CMT

Hi, Ani.

Listen to Happygal.

The GSRII is probably the least useful biofeedback approach to this certification.

See the archives for where you can find a better GSR machine. If this were me I would look at eBay (or similars) for a used one and when you have established your own skill sell it back.

Thank you.
My problem is that I do not have a sign, a somatic evidence during or after SR to show that the method I use is working. A need such a sign to grab on, to continue and to persist.

I am thinking of building my one GRS machine. A typical resistance meter measuring over 20 MOhms and two electrodes attached to fingers should be sufficient.

I do believe that SR is the solution but I need an evidence, a sign to keep this belief strong.

Thanks, Ani.

For those who have a modicum of understanding of electronics and physiology, as well as the manual dexterity to "make it so", building one should not be hard.

The beauty of the concept is that most of us are too numb to feel these subtle changes and so need something (biofeedback) to magnify those changes to the point where they are shouting and cannot be ignored.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
