how does anesthetia effect your body???

Posted by slimmyjane [1676.21] on April 15, 2004 at 10:06:08:

I had cosmetic surgery a couple of years ago. Prior to the surgery, I had some symptoms, but considered them minor, as they did not greatly impact my life. I woke up some nights feeling sweaty and my heart racing, and also had intermittent episodes of feeling flushed, nauseous, and shaky. Then, I had surgery and all hell broke loose with my health about a month after surgery. Those intermittent symptoms started all the time, along with others. I was wondering what effects anesthetia has on the body and if it could be the thing that pushed me over the edge? Does if effect your liver? intestines? autonomic nervous system? Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Hi SlimmyJane,

My health practitioner said ages ago that anaesthesia is putting you pretty close to a form of death, so you have to expect to take a while to bounce back. I'm not sure what the specific effects would be, but they're profound. I think it's one of those things that isn't acknowledged by the medical profession, just how serious it is...

I know that it takes a while to bounce back, but my surgery was 2 years ago. I am looking for any long term effects, if there are any. Thanks for the insight though.

Hi, Slimmn (& Holly).

Listen to J. Anesthesia is such a stress in certain cases that it is like a little death and permanently resets the homeodynamic setting of the hypothalamus axis.

The only solution is serious wellness for at least a year or so.

Let us know how you do.

I must be the exception to the rule. I had major surgery in 1996. I went in for a hysterectomy on January 2. With all the problems I had had I couldnt wait to get down there. On my way down, there was a doctor in a green outfit. I said are you the aneasthetist. He said yes. I said well I dont want to wake up paralysed! He laughed. I said, dont laugh because I really mean it!!

I went down about 2pm and came back up about 6pm. By 8pm I was on the phone to my mother and my sister. They threw me out after 4 days when I was booked in for 7. The consultant said I should have 3 months off work. I was well enough to go back after 2 weeks but he wouldnt let me go. I eventually went back after 2 months.

I can honestly say when I came up after the op I felt better than I had felt for years. I think it was the oxygen I had because I am a shallow breather and I reckon I got a good dose of oxygen thoughout the op.

No problems whatsoever for me. I was up and about the very next day with no ill effects.

Maz

Love it! What if you were on a sort of post anaesthetic high? Lucky you didn't try to fly from Ward 12 on the 10th floor or something!!! ;)

I can honestly tell you that there must be something seriously weird about me. When I undergo general or twilight anesthesia I feel wonderful for weeks on end. I feel well rested, grounded, relaxed and have many fewer medical/physical problems than I did before the procedure regardless of whether or not those problems were related to the procedure.

The same thing with fainting. Everytime I faint it is like undergoing a life altering experience and everything both physically/medically and emotionally/psychologically is improved for the better for months to come.

Is that not the weirdest thing ever?

Now somebody explain that and I will be interested!

Hi, Same.

You would get the same temporary benefits from just a few successful SR experiences. All that is happening is that your entire system is getting a vacation from stress-effect for a short time.

See how you feel when you have successfully done SR for 6-12 months. Let us know what you learn.
