Meditation Question for Everyone

Posted by Blissy [4.1601] on April 16, 2005 at 22:43:51:

Just curious to know how many of you here follow Walt's protocol of regular, daily practise of meditation, and if so, how has it benefited your health?

I don't mean to be negative, but I have done regular daily meditation, either in the form of yoga (which may not be ideal) or other forms of SR later on for about 5 years. I think that it only helps for me during the time that I practice it and then it is like a crash off of a high. I plummet into a hole and feel terrible until the next time I use it. In my circumstances, there has been no change for this time, even though all biofeedback indicates that it is working.

No one has ever been able to explain this!

P,

In my experience, unless it is practiced TWICE A DAY no permanent benefits accrue.

It really bothers me that people construct their own programs and then complain when they do not work!

Once a day CAN produce immediate and minor benefits but that is not what people are wanting--so far as I can see from this BB.

I do practice protocol for meditation, but it's not specifically Walts; but close. I practice buddhism, and that has been very beneficial. You know if your meditation is working if you can't seem to let go of issues, negativity, anxiety, etc... if nothing really is different for you, you need to change your protocol.
Buddhism doesn't seem to have as many rules to practice by, so for me, it is less stressful. I feel that for some people having the guidlines may be more beneficial - but if you do a lot of reading, you may want to delve into other forms of meditation.

Hi Walt,

Can SR twice daily for 20 minutes counteract a day and night full of stress, and on a fairly regular basis? I mean what if one's life is so stressful that immediately following those blissful feelings acheived during SR normal routines are resumed, stress and all. Does it follow that the more stress there is the more times one has to do SR in a day?

Thanks,
gabriella

Hi Blissy,

I do. It helped my health TREMENDOUSLY and continues to make any remedy I try work better!!!!! How did it help? It decreased the muscular tension (bracing) throughout my entire body, decreased my anxiety, increased my confidence, decreased my leaky gut.... I can't even remember all the improvements but there were so many! It created a foundation for improving my health in other ways.

I started doing SR three times a day and now I do it one to three times depending upon how much I feel I need it. It still helps a lot!

Doing SR is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes,
Jan

Yes, Gabriella.

The idea is to build up a distance between you and the edge of the cliff. SO, for the first 6 months you are mainly getting the short term benefits you notice right after the practice. Then, you begin to see them both.

MY goal is to get people to become students of the process and experience what I, and so many others have experienced and then YOU will be teaching US.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you follow Walt's protocol...when I was doing that I couldn't believe all the benefits - my rosacea went away, bracing lessened (along with bruxism) LGS healed, CRS healed, road rage disappeared, I handled an abusive supervisor MUCH better and just reacted to all of life's stress with much more calm and thought, not just knee jerk reactions. I was much happier. At the time, I was also doing the other two legs of the 3LS, and I never felt better. I am in the process of staring all of it over again, since I let things slip as I began to feel better and basically just thought I could get away with stuff. Now I'm in rather bad shape (though not as bad as before I began to practice the 3LS).

Walt,

I have that happen with folks who want help with McFerrans' protocol and then change it, or do it wrong because they didn't understand something...I get to a place where I can't help them because by changing the protocol, they change the outcome. I always feel bad for them because generally it takes as much work as doing it the other way!

Thanks Walt,

"The idea is to build up a distance between you and the edge of the cliff."

I take that to mean that if there's a lot of stress then twice daily won't be sufficient.

With both short and long term benefits SR is so powerful indeed. It's unfortunate that many people don't feel the short term benefits enough to keep them in the game, and then of course there are no long term benefits.

I hope someday that I can honor you by teaching what I've actually experienced to be true, not just from the books, articles, and posts claim.

Yes, labrat, I know exactly what you mean!. I notice when I let my SR slide for even a short time, petty things bother me. Now that I am back into it, it's amazing how things don't get to me. It's a stark contrast!

I sometimes feel like it's a magic pill, for body and mind, and wonder why more people do not practise it, unless maybe some people experience more benefits from it than others?

I have always found it very easy to meditate and get into the alpha state.

What is interesting is that as my pregnancy progresses, the "little one" is much more active, yet when I meditate, he/she becomes so quiet, I have to wonder where he/she has gone! lol.Baby

I think the baby senses the calmness and stillness, and responds accordingly. Walt even said the baby is also meditating with me! Such an incentive to keep going with it.

P.S. What form of meditation do you practise and how long have you been using it????

Hi Walt

I agree. I often wonder when people say its not working for them, how strictly are they following the protocol, and have they made SURE they are reaching the alpha state?

I have started practising twice a day again just recently, only because I noticed the benefits I started getting just from ONCE a day, after I had stopped meditating for about a week. So I thought, if I could get that much benefit from once a day, what could TWICE a day do for me!? So now I am keeping it to twice a day as a general rule. But I won't beat myself up, if I can only get one meditation session in per day because of my schedule. That is stil a successful day with once a day!

I find the less pressure I put on myself, the easier it is to keep going with it, or with anything really.

Walt,

I remember you mentioned that with some people, they can get enough benefit with just once a day.

What differentiates the once-a-day meditation session, from other people who need twice a day medtation sessions to experience the same benefits??

I think that (following someone elses protocol) is only beneficial for the person who is sort of a lost sheep in the woods...learning and needing guidance.

I think that once one develops an understanding of themselves more deeply ONLY they can set a protocol that is truely for themselves, and that long term benefits can only be truely understood by the person who is experiencing them.

I find it odd that many of the people here who ask the most questions about SR/Meditation are also the most anxious and hyper-nervous. I don't find that this is actually working for them and they probably need to delve deeper to find something that holds more meaning for them; OR really figure out if the talk is matching the walk!

Hi Blissy,

I tried all the techniques over the years -- and found them distracting. So I finally made up my own. It is "not doing any technique." Works like a charm. I've been doing it for the last 5 or 6 years.

Go for it

Thanks, Happygal.

I also use my own particular meditation practise. At times I like to use different techniques for variety, but keep it very simple. The most important thing, rather than the technique is making sure that one is reaching the alpha state.

Last night, I meditated with a group of about 8 people, and the facilitator of the group used a meditation technique I had never tried before.
At his house, there was a waterfall, and we focused our attention onto the sound of the water falling. That too got me into the alpha state. Meditation is actually a very simple thing! Nothing that complicated about it at all.

The one meditation technique I had problems with was the breath meditation. I don't use that one. I tend to focus TOO MUCH on the breath in the breath meditaiton, and it never really becomes natural.

I use entrainment cds - from the Relaxation Company and Brainsync...I have a Tom Kenyon one as well. I have a handful of different cds.

I also got rolfed before I became very successful at my SR. It helped me tremendously, and I recommend it to all who are having trouble holding their stress in their muscles. I'm afraid I am rather tightly wound! I realized this early on in my practice since I could 'feel' where I needed to be in my brain/mind, but I could see that my muscles were not going to let me get there! I started being rolfed, and also got in the habit of working out BEFORE I did my SR...works like a charm!

Thanks so much, labrat.

I would love to look into those cd's. Is "entrainment" similar to Centerpointe????

I did a few sessions of Rolfing. It was relaxing for sure, but I didn't think it made any huge difference. Maybe I just needed to keep going with it, but it was quite expensive. 90 dollars a session and not covered by insurance.

P.S. Do you have an email address I could email you on. I have some other questions I would like to ask you. Or you can email me on mareea31@hotmail.com

Entrainment just means that the sounds put your mind into alpha/theta. (or whatever wavelength the cd has on it). Centerpointe is one example. I looked into it and just thought it was way too expensive as I was doing just fine with the BrainSync...

I did not find the Rolfing sessions themselves relaxing, in fact a few of them were downright painful. However, the overall effect was to greatly lessen my muscle tension and improve my posture. It was more of a long term relaxation if you will. I was very luck in that my Rolfer was a licensed physical therapist so the insurance covered some of the cost. In any case I thought it was well worth the expense.

My email is linked above.
