Hi,
I need some help doing my skilled relaxation. My problems are as follows:
I have trouble reaching "alpha". I just can't seem to relax enough no matter how hard I'm trying. Any suggestions?
I have reached "alpha" several times, so I think I know what it feels like. I feel like I'm floating, I really can't feel my entire body, time passes very quickly. However, my mind seems to keep thinking of things. I can't seem to clear my mind.
How long do I need to be in "alpha" to reap the benefits of the SR? Because it can take me 30 minutes to relax enough, sometimes. I know Dr. Stoll recommends 20 minutes, but is that 20 minutes "in alpha?".
Thanks for any help you can send my way.
Renee

I don't think you have a problem Renee!
What you're experiencing is normal, and getting over it will come with practice.
No, you're not expected to be in alpha for 20 minutes...that is the very reason for the 20 minute guidelines. They assume that you'll only be "there" on and off during that time.
The more you practice the better you will become and the longer you'll stay in alpha. You are experiencing what's called "monkey mind" and you can read about that in the archives...just takes more practice to learn to clear your mind once you notice that you're thinking again.

Hi, Renee.
Listen to Labrat. I have only one thing to add: Reaching "alpha" is best achieved by "giving in" to the process, not trying harder. You cannot "make yourself" go to sleep either; that is a process of giving in as well.

Hi Renee,
Here is another tip. Try doing some gentle exercise before SR, like a nice walk for example. That might help your mind be quieter. Also some people benefit by getting a massage or two to help them relax overall. Trying different times of day might also help. I discovered I had more trouble getting into alpha early in the morning, but in the afternoon, it was very easy.
Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks Walt! You gave me that advice years ago, and it helped me get over the "hump"!
I'm so glad to see you posting - you must be feeling much better!
