Walt,
I ran this past Happygal first, because I'm vain and I did want you or the board the think I was crazy.
Anyway I have been doing SR for 3 or 4 months and I have been able to " Pop " in to the zone with ease, but was only able to stay there for 8 to 12 minutes. Then I would just pop/snap out. I could not stay in no matter what I did. However just this week I found myself staying in for an hour, one time an a hour and 15 minutes another. This morning I stayed in for 1/2 hour and stopped on my own to get ready for work. Jan tells me you can stay in all day. I guess that's why you posted you can drive in the zone.
I'm not sure how I could work " in the zone ". I can see I still have a long way to go, but I am pleased with my results so far.
Hope you have a great day,
Silver Fox!

Steve, I am still sooo confused about SR. I can do the zone out thing; it feels like a twilight sleep, I'm barely aware of outside things and I have flittering thoughts that flow smoothly away, no dwelling on anything. Is that the correct zone or alpha or alpha/theta. Then, like you, I'll pop out.
And sometimes like last night I couldn't get my mind to rest at all but my body was like a dish rag which I was mindful of. Would this serve as a "proper zone" for SR. I remember when Dr. Stoll rented my mom a biofeedback machine. I was having a conversation with her and the machine indicated she was still in "the zone". So her mind was alert but her body was relaxed, is this ok, I wonder, and count as effective SR?
In the "recapture your Health" I think it only says you need to be in the zone for 6 minutes or so to reap benefits?

Carol,
Yes, I read about 6 minutes too. So I thought my 8 to 12 was enough.
I get a Buzz or tingley feeling all over my body. Comes and goes in waves, surging up and down. I am aware of my suroundings, but I could no more drive a car than could my 5 year old grandaughter. I seem to be able to tell myself when to stop. I have been able to do that for years when I sleep. I never use an alarm clock. I just tell myself that I need to get up at 4:00 and I do, or I will take a 20 minute nap and just wake up after 20 minutes. I will play with seeing how long I can go in the zone over the weekend.
I wish some Zen master would come on the board and give us some tips.

Thanks, Steve.
This parallels my own experiences with this as I became more adept at the practice. Please share your experiences with the BB participants as you continue to progress. There are more wonders to behold.
Namaste`

Walt is the closest you will come to a "zen master" on the board. I think he has been meditATinG the longest out of anyone here.

I don't meditate. I just pop in. I have been working on this and I can pop in anytime its quite. As I type this I am in the zone. I can feel tingling up and down my arms and legs. I am in my office at my desk. If the phone rings or someone walks into my office and talks to me I pop out. Then when it gets quite again I pop back in. I don't know if this is doing me any good, but its fun to experiment.

Hi Jan,
I did it most of the morning and all through lunch. Didn't seem to have to work at it. I just started again at 3:00.

Congratulations, Steve.
Most people never get to this stage. Personally, I think it is an ideal level of skill and very effective without having to schedule SR "sessions".

Walt,
At what point is there no longer a need to stay in the zone or Alapha state?

Hi, Steve.
In my opinion, in consideration of our "modern" culture, we all would do a lot better to practice this at least 20 minutes twice a day just like we brush our teeth or bathe every day.
Once we get where we can just flip into and out of the "zone" our own bodyminds will tell us to do it regularly because it so enriches our lives while it has the side effect of benefitting our physiology.
Hope this helps. Comments?

when you pop into the zone, what signals are you getting that you are actually in the alpha state? how do you know you are in alpha?

Walt,
I am finding that my body wants to zone out and I will jump without trying too. Then when its enough I just stop. Not really trying to do either.
If there is one thing I have learned over the years is to listen to my body. It wants in the alpha state, ok with me. I did 15 minutes this morning before work. But I jumped in about 20 minutes ago sitting in my office. So I guess I need more.
