Unique problems doing SR

Posted by Eric d'cleric [3011.2003] on November 18, 2006 at 10:05:12:

Okay, besides the scheduling difficulties, I've had another problem
that has impacted my SR (meditation) sessions.

I don't know if the acid reducing medications I'm taking to help
control LPR have lost their efficacy (it happens), but, to a great
degree, the cough has returned.

This cough is clinically a response to acid in the pharynx and the
attendent post-nasal drip, so it is unresponsive to normal cough
remedies (so suggestions like cough drops and their like are
ineffective).

I use a binaural-beat technology CD for SR (not certified, but this
technology is pretty much reliable for producing brainwave states)...
however, just about ALL of my sessions are constantly interrupted
either by coughing or the urge to cough! Consequently I would
assume that the SR is not effective.

I'm at a loss as to what to do! Deep breaths result in coughing fits
too. I'm at the end of my rope here... I really want to get back on the
"wagon." So far the only thing that has combated the cough was
Xanax, but I don't want to go there (just did a 6 month withdrawal
from it and I'm clean now). My ENT has suggested Baclofen, but it
sounds like an ugly drug.

Anyway, according to conventional ENT wisdom, when the acid is
controlled, so is the cough... it WAS controlled for about 9 months.

I dunno, I suppose I will just do my best and cough through the CD,
but this is quite depressing.

Hi Eric,

Try one or several different methods of SR, that don't use that beat, and see if it helps.

Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks, Eric.

First of all this story is somewhat a "catch 22".

The very fact that your cough responded to the Xanax, AND your doc is recommending the Baclofen, proves that this is directly related to the storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus since that is the only thing that COULD be affected by those drugs! In my opinion, the main reason your doc has not confronted you with this mechanism is that it is not cost- effective for his income to do so. It takes a lot of his time that could be much better put to use to make income for him with other patients.

Now it is a case of "the tickle, tickle, tickle that makes you cough, cough, cough". There are two ways to think of this, that I know of: 1. You waited too long to attack the causes: acid reflux, etc. (also due to stress-effect storage) and 2. Now it is going to take a real effort of will to stop this cycle.

My best advice at this point would be to not only attack the causes but exert your maximal effort when the urge to cough comes on and "just say no". The urge to cough will eventually go away and you will have made real progress out of this mess.

This is a step by step process. Let us know how you do with this step and then we will go on to the next. You will eventually get to the place where you CAN do effective SR and THEN, you had better never stop doing it.

Walt

I'll do the best I can - but there is a bit more to it.

Okay, when the cough is tickle derived or choking derived I will make
my best effort of will. But more than half the time it is derived from
mucus in my throat from PND. It is REALLY there because if I "fight it"
eventually reflexes win out and bam, a big lugie flies out like in the
movie "there's something about Mary" - meaning it can go anywhere.
Very embarrasing.

I did attack the cause with diet, exercise and SR, but eventually fell off
the wagon as it became harder over time than easier. But now with
the BP issues I am motivated again.

Anyway, I will do my best... it is frustrating because I feel like I've just
gone back to where I was 2 years ago with docs saying just resist the
urge, yeah, right! Well, I'm back on the 3LS to the best of my ability.

I don't see any other method of SR other than the CD as practical for
me for obvious reasons. I will stick with it, even through the
distractions.

Interesting about the relation of the drugs and the hypothalamus, as
"medicine" (doctors) basically say that they mask the sensations...
thank you for the details. Still, there is that PND, sometimes in
massive amounts (presumbably to counter pharyngal acid from an
ineffective UES???).

So, in regards to the 3LS, definitely exercising at least 3 times a week;
whole foods... well, it is the holiday season so it is imperfect, but
mostly good and; SR - can get through about 85% of a CD w/o
coughing, and will work on that urge... can't do anything about
genuine choking, though (whether derived from mucus or from acid
aspirate that irritates lungs - feels like a whiff of HCl), as it is a body
reflex.

Thank you for your insight (as frustrating as a catch-22 is), I haven't
given up, not by a long shot - more motivated! I definetly feel that
this can be constrolled, it is just difficult because it takes so long that
you are stuck wondering if you are moving forward at all!

Guess I'll need to get your book back from my brother to reread the
material on the storage of stress effect! Onward.

Eric,

Remember that the average person makes a QUART AND A HALF of upper respiratory secretion every 24 hours. You may notice it more because of thickening due to allergy or lining sensitivity due to the inflammation of GERD but there STILL is nothing you need to do about it!

This has been discussed for years on this BB and a lot of that information has been archived. Good luck!

Walt
