Chanting: SR technique

Posted by k. [80.56] on May 01, 2008 at 14:05:06:

In an absolutely desperate attempt to heal my foot myself, I decided to experiment with vibrational healing. I first tried quantum touch, but it was hard for me to reach my foot and have my arm and body be relaxed at the same time. So I decided to do chanting. I started with "oooohhhmmmm". Not only did it actually feel things stirring up in my foot, it really put me in the alpha state.

And because I can never get enough of a good thing, I thought I'd read about chanting and came across an article with an excellent techique. I tried it and love it. The great thing about chanting is that it's free, you can do it almost anywhere, almost any time. If the alpha feeling finally starts to wear off, just open your mouth and start chanting and within minutes you're feeling great all over again. :)

Close your eyes, chant the following sounds, while visualizing the corresponding chakra:

1."aaahhh" at the belly button

2."eeeeee" at mid stomach

3."oooooo" at the heart

4."uuuuuu" at the throat

5."mmmmmm" at the forhead

Chant these in this order from 3 - 12 times as needed.

Thanks, k.

I have found that many forms of chanting are very effective for getting into the SR state. Unfortunately only a minority of people achieve your results. Certainly worth a try for anyone.

Congratulations for finding "your way".

Hi K.

Sounds excellent to me! (Sounds like a fun SR method, actually!)

Best wishes and ohm,
Jan

Thank you Walt.

I wonder why only a minority acheive results? It seems so easy and accessible. When I do the sessions with the "a-m" I can almost feel the chakras letting the energy in.

I also tried looking through blue and red glass for some light therapy, but need to read more about it.

Hi Jan,

It is fun and so quick and easy. There are times when I have to do it a little longer than others, but that's the way SR is, as you know. I'm not even self-conscious about the noise anymore, and am ready to do it anywhere. :)

And a nice, big fat oooohhhhmmmm to you too!

Hi K,

Dr. Benson recommends focusing on something to achieve the relaxation response, chanting is one thing you could do.

thanks for the tip.

k,

It isn't that there is anything inherently wrong with chanting but that peop;e are SO different and varied in their tendencies to respond to the SR goal. I have mostly talked about the types (here on this website) that seem to work for the largest % of people but I hope that does not inhibit ANYONE from trying different approaches until they find what works for them.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Lissa,

You're very welcome. In the simpe method of just chanting "oooohhhmm" you focus on that. In the method I posted, it's very easy to focus on each of those chakras. Either way, it works nicely.

Thanks Walt, I completely understand, one size does not fit all. Last year I started doing qui gong and
that put me under very nicely as well. :)

One of the things I really like about chanting is that it is so convenient. Like with exercise - if I have to drive to the gym, look for a parking spot, and wait for exercise equipment - I'm less likely to do it. Alternatively, if I can put on a pair of skates, good walking shoes, or hop on a bike, and get some fresh air to boot, I'm more likely to engage.

k.

AND there are many kinds of chanting so, when one kind stops working, there are many others to try,

Thanks Walt, then I'll definitely do some more reading to have a few more methods on hand. So far I am alternating between the "ooohhhmmm" and the "a - m" and the combination works out well, but would love to try some more!

All of this is based on the relaxation response.
I believe the original relaxation response work was done around
transcendental meditation.
The relaxation response is only one of many western approachs to
body/mind.
I'm sure some of the eastern disaplines go much deeper.
You read of Yogi's ability to almost stop their heart beats or Tibetian
Buddhists ability to withstand below zero tempatures.
I had the immense fortune to have had a sitting with C. Trumpa
Rimpoche in 1972 where he advised me on meditation.
Now 35 years later some of this is starting to make sense and clearly
pays off with my SR. This is heavy stuff. Takes a lifetime to
understand the ten minute sitting. After Trumpa's death, many of
the Rimpoche's praised him as a really great one. I believe this to be
true and feel blessed that he focused a teaching my way.
Some people seem to be getting hung up on the biofeedback stuff.
Walt and Jan are on to something with the stressors we in modern
western society face. Getting rid of these stresses makes sense.
The best ways to do this will always be debateable.
I've been doing SR for almost a year now, but actually for forty years.
I've moved from visualization back to the Buddhist meditations I was
shown by a teacher.
I'm now going to see where this leads me.
My interest in SR is that I believe it can play a major role in healing
the major diseases.
Several weeks ago I found a lead I posted elsewhere on this board
about a physician who got a simple meditation from an Indian saint
in the early sixties. Using this meditation he was able to get cancer
remissions in ten percent of his patients, those willing to do the
meditation as prescribed. Most of his patients wouldn't do it.
He clearly was on to something but he passed away in the late
1980's. I believe he had a tool to work with the mind body
connections and it stopped cancer many times.
I may be wrong in this, but when you hit on something it should
greatly show improvements in one's life.
Lastly, many times when I post, I'll bury the post like I did here.
It's for the people who are willing to dig.
I tire of the daily posts of many people with their daily rantings.
I'm just as crazy as the next person but would like to have a more
mature conversation concerning health issues.
In the end I guess I'm like anyone else, on my own, in my quest to
learn about health, mind and body.

I think Walt would agree with everything you're saying and I think he's purposely low-key about the "wider world" that one is being introduced to (really the 4th leg of the 3LS) when starting an "SR" practice. I think he likes to keep it simple with simple terminology as an educational tool, to make it accessible to people, not to claim he has a lock on it or that it's all you need to get on in life (heavens). Once the door is open then someone can just do it as is and still benefit, or take it as far as they want. At least that's how I see it...

Thank you for coming back and mentioning you had gone to ions.org when we were talking about it, and for mentioning the site about Meares which I read at length. I also appreciate your posts about the Pauling protocol. Someone close to me benefited greatly from the Pauling and Nieper recommendations.

Thanks Jan. I found the Meares work very interesting.
It's what got me back to doing the Buddhist meditations I was given
35 years ago.
The Mind/body/soul stuff interests me.

PS JanS. You made my day by responding.
Knowing that someone is reading the posts makes a big difference.
I believe the communities made possible by the internet have infinite
possibilities. Our abilities to share our knowledge and experience is
revolutionary.
I'm a big time internet believer.

Edward: Thank you. I'm glad to know that. The mind/body stuff interests me very much as well. The nonstructured approach to meditation resonates with me and certain ways I've come to do meditation. It was intriguing to read someone talking about just that and the issues around it. Agree! The internet is a revolutionary knowledge tool.

Hi Blissy,

No but I REALLY love them!!! I always swear I'm going to get a really big one on a stand, and one of these days I will. Do you use them and if so, how?
