Doctors Find Meditation Affects Your Body (SR)

Posted by ukchris [10820.4621] on July 03, 2008 at 21:34:39:

"It turns out peaceful thoughts really can influence our bodies, right down to the instructions we receive from our DNA, according to a new study.

Researchers for the study, published in the Public Library of Science, took blood samples from a group of 19 people who habitually meditated or prayed for years, and 19 others who never meditated.

The researchers ran genomic analyses of the blood and found that the meditating group suppressed more than twice the number of stress-related genes -- about 1,000 of them -- than the nonmeditating group.

The more these stress-related genes are expressed, the more the body will have a stress response like high blood pressure or inflammation. Over long periods of time, these stress responses can worsen high blood pressure, pain syndromes and other conditions.

The nonmeditating group then spent 10 minutes a day for eight weeks training in relaxation techniques that involved repeating a prayer, thought, sound, phrase or movement.

"What this does is to break the train of everyday thought -- you no longer have stressful thoughts and because of that the body is able to return to a healthy state," said Dr. Herbert Benson, director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute Mind/Body Medicine and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

By the end of the training, the novice meditating group was also suppressing stress-related genes, although at lower levels than those of the long-term meditating people."

Reducing Stress

I wonder if things we Do other than meditation or SR can reduce stress? I like to do most things myself, and don't think my neighbors understand or accept it. When someone can't, or doesn't want to do things for themselves. I get some dumb comments. Like when changing the oil on a new car, a friendly machinist neighbor, who I have had situations with before said, Already working on the car, like it was broken. Told him, I wanted the oil changed the way I wanted it done. Then he tells me, he has had a few situations. One time paying for a premium oil, and it Not being put in to, picking up the car and it had NO Oil in it!!! He once told me he Always wanted to learn how to work on his, and Even took Adult Auto Shop classes at the HS, but didn't last that long. When he sees me working on things, he often makes, dumb, negative comments like. I make him Tired just watching me, or Don't have a heart attack, as I struggle to do what I am doing. When I am feeling strong, the comments bounce off me, and I realize, he is telling me how doing things similar makes HIM feel, but unless feeling strong, they can really bother me, and a part of what makes it SO hard to get started.

I started working on my house, Again, after TEN years, when I started, and didn't finish, or finish what I had started, leaving things Half Done. I don't know how many neighbors know about my injury, or even care. Some people may not like someone, so if not dumb comments, you get Looks, OR Sounds. Yesterday, while taking my Heavy front door off to finish stripping all the paint, and rebuilding the glass & wood paneled door, that is Coming apart, but is So pretty with beveled & etched glass panels, that I had wanted to remake, with 3 raised wood panels to match the 3 glass ones, instead of the 2, and make it insulated. I had the bottom of door resting on the sidewalk, waiting for
woman to pass, and she decides she has to move a neighbors recycling bucket from the curb to next to their step, an as she passes she looks at the door and Grunts... I had to wait for her to do Her thing since the sidewalks are narrow, and Then she Grunts. So I Grunted and grunted, and grunted. Hey I was struggling with the weight.

I usually get comments like, Every time I see you, you are working on your car... That's about the Only time I am out in the street, not going or coming. I Love when I am struggling doing something, and get Dumb coments. One time I just Looked at the guy, and he said. Oh, you like to Tinker, as I was greased up to my elbows, trying to replace a difficult water pump, that had been leaking for 1 1/2 yrs, and I couldn't get doing it.

Cars get beat up in the city and even more so with immigrants who Can't drive or like a Friend Said, you Have to Hit the bumpers when pulling out when I commented about the paint missing on his Back bumper, where people have hit it. He Called me a Liar, when I told him I Don't hit cars. It got pretty heated, because I matched His tone and volume and eyes bugging out. Last week, I saw a pickup bang into my new car, and split the license plate cover. I have been weanting to Break one of his headlights, but haven't seen it wehere is was close. The other day I was working on the car, and he was behind me, and I thought, if he just offered to pay for cover, I wouldn't take it, and not bust his light, but he Almost hit it Again, with 10' of space. I Know I'll feel a lot better Poping his headlight, and grunting at the grunters, and thinking the ones making Dumb comments are DUMB. One guy who Says he is a programmer for the Gov tried to convince me that New Compact SUV's cost 7K$, and I Should buy one, so I Didn't have o Fix my Old Chevy, because Every time he Saw me I was working on it. Another one who doesn't Realize, that's the only time he probably Would see me, unless we went out at the Same time, and he leaves for work at 5AM. Dumb and Dumber ??

When I don't feel strong, these things will bother me. When I do, I deal with them and understand where they come from. One new younger neighbor must be loving I am working on the house again. He had asked me how I liked the New paint on his front door that you couldn't see much through the storm door. Must have been a Hint, since mine has been Stripped for a few years, and the window frame molding off on one for About 10, and white paint on the brick wall was fading. I Only saw it when going in and out, and when Out I was working on a car.))

Thanks so much for post this ukchris.

The benefits of meditation absolutely astound me. I dont know if others experience it so quick as well.

I have been having a really hard time lately, not coping well with things, and last night, i went to my ashtanga yoga class (the back release was amazing!) and then when I came home I meditated for 40mins.

today, I swear, I feel like a new woman, not just physically. in every way. Mentally, emotionally as well. sometimes I feel like meditation is pure magic!!!

I will be forever grateful to walt for instilling the importance of it in my life. Better than any counselling session.

Namaste`

Hi VF,

Vince? Yes, there are other ways to reduce stress, but there are so many stressors out there, and it's almost impossible to do much about so many of them. That's why it's easier to work on stress by doing the SR. Actually, I like working in both directions -- doing SR AND working on decreasing outside stressors.

Don't forget that inappropriate diet and lack of exercise are both stressors.

Best wishes,
Jan

my stress goes Way down when I have the strength to do what I want and have to do. I was never one much for exercise, since I like-d everything I did to be like one, or be physically draining. I wouldn't be happy till I was spent, and even made easy jobs harder than they were to make them feel like a workout. I know a retired cop who said he has a bad back. Couldn't tell him by looking at him. I would tell him what I was Trying to do, and he said, he knew his limits, and didn't do things. I lash myself up, and do the work, when I am able to.

I can't do much about diet, since I am Not one to Eat This, and Not eat That, because it is Supposed to be better. I have tried that before, and wasted money, because the food goes bad, sitting. If what I crave isn't right, then I'm in trouble, But happy.)))

his wife, who had been sick for a long time, died a few yrs ago, but he has been like that ever since I knew him. When I had a carb apart, he asked if I knew what I was doing. I was just going to adjust the floats, and told him I would figure it out. I get a kick out of the stories of Bad or non performed work he had done, and then he says, I am smart for doing the things he sees me do. The guy makes Me tired looking at him, since he moves like he has no energy.

SR is just one way to do it. I find hanging out with friends is much
more enjoyable and heck, I never worry if I'm "getting enough" or
"having enough fun"... I love watching the posts that freak over if their
SR is right - it's like, uh, if you chillaxed, you would not need SR!

today at the park I stopped to chat with a guy I younger guy I know. A short while later, a few older guys he chats with showed up. I have been stopping to chat with them when I see them, for a few mo. Shortly after the talk started complaining about minorities. The guy I know asked if I was liberal, and I said, I treat everyone as an individual, and don't lump everyone together. I was told, who makes up the majority in prisons, like certain people are just no good.

I like encouraging the good people, and good in people, no matter who they are. Last week one was throwing a ball to his Pitt Bull, which I think a Lot of guys own because of their reputation, wanting to Be Bad. I have a dog loving friend who is a Good Guy who just took in a stray one, who was all over me for attention. The one at the park came over to me as I sat, half in my car, cleaning the windshield, and surprised me. The dog was acting strange, standing between my spread legs. NOT a very comfortable position. Then I saw the dog had a ball in its mouth, and probably wanted me to throw it. The owner came over and called it, so everything was cool. I thought for a minute, and went over to the guy, and asked if he went on line, and told him there were some neat videos on You Tube, of dogs chasing balls, and doing things with balls, that he might enjoy. I described a few, and he said, he would get his daughter to look them up, and thanked me..

I try to avoid negative people, who complain about everything or everybody, just because they are different, or do things They don't.

In my experience and opinion, dogs are pretty good judges of character. I know of no career criminals who have a dedicated dog companion.
