SR near bedtime, quick question

Posted by Jim W [12278.4464] on February 02, 2009 at 23:15:28:

I have been doing SR for a long time now. It makes sense to me that falling asleep DURING SR would not help with long term benefits, because you would be exiting alpha/theta and going to delta. I just don't get how sleeping AFTER SR would decrease chances of long term benefits from SR. Dr. Stoll I know has said something like to wait 2 hours before sleeping. I was just wondering if there was any source anyone could find that states this is the case. It's just that some nights I only have time near bedtime, and I can maybe stay up an hour after meditation but I am really cutting into my sleep time. Thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Hi Jim W,

Doc Walt has said that he couldn't find any reason for it. But in his clinical practice, it became apparent to him that the people who did SR within 2 hours of sleeping didn't get the same health results as those who did their SR more than 2 hours before sleep.

Best wishes,
Jan

I'm still waiting for Dr Stoll's book so I can only comment on what little I know about Yoga not SR. I have re-started Yoga in the last month when my GERD fired up. I suspect much what I am feeling is due to stress. Many of us may be in the same boat.

Apart from its obvious physical benefits, Yoga spends a lot of time on relaxation and breathing techniques. When I was with my first instructor she would always say the best time for Yoga is 1.First thing in the morning or 2.At the end of your work day. She would always say do not do Yoga and then go to bed. It gives a feeling of being rushed - completely contrary to everything you are trying to do. "I have to get this out of the way to end my day". Her idea of an ideal practice would be a couple of hours after supper when you meal has been digested. Then afterwards, a nice warm shower or bath. Then relax for at least an hour - watching TV, read a book whatever you enjoy. THEN go to sleep.

Yoga should be part of your day not a necessary end to it. I don't know for sure but SR may be the same thing. Make time for it. Don't fit it in. When I do Yoga its done with the understanding that nobody interrupts my practice unless the house is on fire. Period. Its only an hour and it does rejuvenate me.

Yes, it is a challenge to get that SR in 2 hours before bedtime. I think the jist of this theory is that you're training your body and mind to calm down OUTSIDE of the normal wind down you have before bed. Works for me!

I find a surge of energy after doing SR. Like taking a power nap. So for me doing SR would keep me awake. That's why I do it early in the day.

Thanks, Chauncy.

It is good to have some more validation of my clinical experience of not doing SR within 2 hours of retiring.

Walt
