Light/Sound Machines...Question for Walt about safety

Posted by Morgan on September 09, 2001 at 03:48:34:

Hi Walt,

I've been looking at different light/sound machines on the internet.

I have seen several sites post a caveat: These machines can trigger seizures in epileptics.

I don't have epilepsy but I did have 2 grand mal seizures when I was a teenager. The doc couldn't find a reason for the seizures and none have occurred since. Given my history, do you think it's safe for me to use one?

Thank you so much for this website! I'm learning a lot by reading the archives, etc.

Good question. My older son wants a strobe light and we considered getting him one until it dawned on me that it's possible it could induce seizures again in my younger son with autism. I don't know that it can, but have vague knowledge about flashing lights and seizures. So I guess I have the same question you have.

I have heard that it is the red LEDs that can potentially cause seizures. There are white light models. Of course, everyone is different .... No guarantees.

Hi, Morgan (Paul C & kmd).

There are many ways to induce the correct brain rhythms for SR. NO one with any history of seizures should use any of them that INDUCE brain rhythms from outside the bodymind as any of them CAN trigger seizures in susceptible people. ALL of these light/sound machines are of those type.

Although the risk is small, why take ANY risk??? There are plenty of other choices.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Hi, Reader.

This is discussed in the archives. Basically, there are 2 different kinds of relaxation: passive and active.

Active is totally safe for anyone and passive (aural rhythms, flashing lights, electrical stimuli) which are THEORETICALLY risky for susceptible people. I know of no one who actually has had a seizure from these but it IS theoretically possible.

Hope this helps.

Walt
