Thanks, Lisa.

You are experiencing what I have been posting for the past few days: 95% of sore throats are viral and even the proven strep cultures get well as fast without antibiotics. Besides, even the dogma that vigorous antibiotic treatment of beta strep group A helps prevent rheumatic fever, is now seriously in doubt.

The instant strep tests are not very accurate but they have been used as though they are.

Experience is the best teacher.

Namaste`

Walt

One of my friend's children tested negative on a rapid, but was positive for strep C on the culture. The other child tested positive on a rapid (which only picks up A), but was negative for A on the culture. The lab stopped after that. So they are both on antibiotics. Another reason I wanted cultures done on both my kids the next time they tested positive on a rapid before doing antibiotics. That happened last Thurs--my youngest had a huge white glob in the back of her throat so I took them both in for the culture (we were thinking that maybe the older one was harboring it in her sinuses or something)--they were both positive on the rapid, but the cultures for anything and everything were 100% normal. I now believe the blisters in the throat and fatigue, etc, were a really nasty virus, and I think the continuing problems are allergy related. That's our next hurdle!
