my 24 yr old son has been getting strep throat quite frequently and it has me worried. the last time his tonsils swelled so his throat was practically closed. he lives with two other persons and there home is not the cleanest. he has been seeing the doctor and receiving amocycillin [sp] which helps it go away then he gets it back. could he be re-aquiring from items in his home?

Dear Trudy,
Even Pasteur (on his deathbed) said that he had been wrong: The main cause of disease was not the infecting organism (the discovery of which was what he is known for) but the immunity of the "host" (person getting the disease).
That is the case here. This wouldn't be happening to him unless his immunity was not as good as it should be. If it were the concentration of "bugs" in his house, everyone else would be getting it right along with him EVERY TIME!
Why can one spray strep germs over a room-full of people and only a few "get" it? What is different about thsoe who do not "get" it? You could spray flu viruses, cold viruses, pneumonia bacteria, etc., over that same room and the same people would "get" each one while the ones that did not get the first ones would not get the last ones either. WHY?
As his age, he is the one who has to decide that he is willing to learn about this & do something about improving his own lifestyle so as to improve his immunity. OUR discussing it is an exercise in futility.

MY SON HAS HAD STREP THROAT 5 TIMES SINCE MARCH 98, IM SCARED THAT HE WILL DEVELOPE AN IMMUNITY TO ANTIBIOTICS BECAUSE OF THIS. HE HAS HAD 3 DIFFERENT TIYPES OF ANTIBIOTICS BUT IM STILL WORRIED.

Dear Laura,
This has been discussed, right here on this bb, within the past few days. The problem is NOT the strep throats but WHY he is getting them. You could go to the homepage & read several articles about immunity.

what causes recurring strep throat in a 24 year old male?

I'd say a compromised immune system. Read all of the information on this BB about a whole food diet, exercise at least three times per week and begin skilled relaxation, and get Dr. Stoll's book.
Now if I can do these things the way I should, I wouldn't have a cold right now. I can tell you that I wasn't practising the three basic elements of good health when I got this cold, and I know that if I had bee, I wouldn't be sniffling now.

Dr. Stoll--
I am 33 and in my first trimester of my first pregnancy.
I am considered immuno-deficient because I no longer have
a spleen since a car accident when I was 16. My sister has a 3 year old who we first thought had fifth disease but it turns out after a throat culture that it is strep. Is there any danger to my fetus? I have a soar throat but no other symptoms and have my first full ob-gyn visit 6/8/98. I don't want to seem overly panicky. Should I be checked out prior to that full blown exam or wait until the 6/8/98 visit and discuss it with the doctor then?
Sincerely,
Barb

Dear Barb,
The rash that goes with strep throat is called Scarlet Fever and looks nothing like Virus Fifth Disease.
You should be concerned.
With your history, I would IMMEDIATELY get a copy of Paavo Airola, ND's masterpiece "Every Woman's Book" and implement it. It will take about a month for your immunity to be enough improved that you would not be at greater risk than others.
In the meantime, your doc should have warned you as to how to quarantine your child at least from you till the risk is gone. Were I you I would consider a prophylactic injection of Bicillin ( a long acting penicillin) to protect you till you can protect yourself.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
I am responding to the information that you e-mailed 5/29/98 and am a little confused. You suggest that my doctor should have warned me as to how to quarantine my child from me until the risk is gone. I was writing in regard to an unborn fetus. I am assuming that you are referring to my 3 year old nephew, who at the time of my contact, we were unaware had Strep Throat. It wasn't until a few days later that the nurse, hearing the description over the phone thought that it might be Fifths disease. My sister took him in immediately to see if it was or not, knowing that I am pregnant and wanting to be sure of what he had.
I have not yet seen a doctor in regard to this pregnancy. I have my first appointment 6/8/98 at which point I will be approximately 7 weeks pregnant. I will get the book "Every Woman's Book" immediately and suggest the Bicillin to my doctor. I guess my concern was, should I be rushing in for an emergency appointment rather than wait for my "earlist available" first pregnancy visit.
I sounds to me from your last response that I should rush in immediately.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Barb
