MVP problem

Posted by Mary Jean Kauffman on September 23, 2002 at 11:11:14:

I have mitral valve prolapse. The only problem I have had is with palpitations. Usually they are only occasionally, but during the summer they became overwhelming and very annoying. I started on beta blockers that helped greatly, but since I am in my 40's decided to stop taking them and see how I felt. I felt good for about a month and now the palpitations have returned. I do not want to take beta blockers for the rest of my life, so I need help. How do I get to what is really causing these continuous palpitations?

Hi Mary Jean:
I also have MVP with annoying LOW blood pressure. I took beta blockers for a little while but had to stop due to the blood pressure being too low. I now take hawthorn berry capsules, and co-Q 10, along with herbal diuretics. This seems to strengthen my heart. I also got an echocardiogram to rule out any other abnormalities. Have you had one yet?

Also watch for any infection

Mary Jean:

Another thing I wanted to mention is that you must watch out for any kind of infection (throat, sinus, lungs, etc.). They'll make the palpitations worse. In my case, any infection will even sometimes cause sharp pains in the heart. They eventually go away after a few days.

I also have MVP and have found that if I don't drink AT LEAST 8 glasses of water a day then I also experience palpitations. Also, avoid caffeine completely!

MVP has no symptoms. What you are experiencing is due to other problems, not MVP. There is extensive info in the archives.

Hope this helps.

Then what's causing the sharp pains & trembling beats?

Hi Labrat:
If MVP has no symptoms, then what causes those sharp pains in the heart and what causes all those trembling/fluttering beats? Do people WITHOUT MVP experience those symptoms? My doctor doesn't have much of an answer. I guess MVP is like a bad back. Unless you have one yourself, it's hard to believe someone could suffer from it. I'll read more in the archives about it, since I'm still new to the board. If Mary jean finds a solution, I hope she'll post it. Thanks for your input Labrat:-)

The way my cardiologist explained it years ago was...everyone has those but not everyone feels them. He said that the reason one feels them while others don't has to due with stress

Take a good Magnesium suppliment (Glycinate is good) about 500-1000 mg/day. Also look in Dr. Stoll's archives to help with the stress effect. If you want the palpitations to subside, you need to research these sites extensively:

Skilled Relaxation, Stress, Wellness, essential oils.

Something ELSE is causing the symptoms.

I do believe that the answer to your question is that YES, people without MVP can have symptoms that you describe. conversely, you can pull random people off the street and test them for MVP and a whole bunch of them will have it, but have no symptoms.

People who have symptoms are getting them from another cause. I am not super familiar with this, only know what I've seen Walt discuss in the past with others who posted about it. Please do read the archives and Dr. SToll's article about MVP. Hope this helps.

You could also have a magnesium deficiency. I get palpatations and sometimes pains in my chest when I don't get enough mag. I take Solgar's Chelated Magnesium (mag. glycinate), 4 in the morning and 4 at night. It also helps my restless legs. I wouldn't be without it.

Namaste`

I was diagnosed with MVP about 12 years ago by way of an echocardiogram. It didn't show up on any stress tests, halter monitor, or EKG, only the echo. I haven't had one recently, didn't really need one. I just started having bad palpitations this summer. There's no anxiety or panic attacks. I don't even feel like there is stress in my life. I am very happy with a loving family, etc. I avoid caffeine, alcohol, and get planty of exercise, so you can understand why I don't want to take the Toprol, and get right to the cause of the palpitations. If it is not the above, what is it? Is it true that the release of adrenaline causes the symptoms? Or could it be monthly hormones?

Hi, Mary.

Since you feel there is "no stress in your life" you need to go to the home page article "Modern Medical Interpretion of Stress". More than 90% of the stress causing stress related illnesses is not the psychosocial stress you still think is everything.
