mitral valve prolapse regurgitation

Posted by Betty on September 25, 2002 at 10:36:39:

My daughter was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse with significant regurgitation. She is having major problems with her breathing and chest pains. Her cardiologists doesn't want to do surgery. They have tried mediaction but that hasn't helped, not even a little bit. She has been out of work for over a month. There hasn't been anything that her doctors have done to alleviate her agony. She can't take much more. What is your opinion on this? I would really appreciate any help I can get. My daughter is 30 years old.
Thanks,
Betty

prolapse or regurgitation?

I though mitral valve prolapse and mitral valve regurgitation were two different things. Regurgitation is serious, prolapse is not. Maybe someone could set me straight.

Thanks, Lincoln.

You are right: for MVP, "foggedaboudit".

Significant mitral valve regurgitation (causes symptoms) is almost always caused by a previously unknown case of rheumatic heart disease.

Since she has already had a significant workup and no one is suggesting surgery (the solution to this problem) the likelyhood is that this is caused by nervousness and stress. All of her symptoms listed COULD be caused by stress-effect storage.

I would first suggest her getting copies of all her records and taking them (in her hand) to a second opinion. If they have "nothing to suggest" the stress scenario MUST be considered.

THEY SAY THE REGURGITATION IS CAUSED BY THE MVP BECAUSE HER PROLAPSE IS MORE PRONOUNCED. HOW SERIOUS IS REGURGITATION??? DO YOU ONLY GET REGURGITATION FROM RHEMATIC FEVER?

Hi, Betty.

To MY knowledge by far the most common cause of significant regurgitation is Rheumatic Heart Disease. This is so much so that any cardiologist must prove that it is not RHD before looking for other causes!

I have never heard of classical MVP causing any significant regurgitation.

If I had the actual readings (along with the normals for that lab) I might be able to say more.

Hope this helps.

Walt
