POST-NASAL DISCHARGE

Posted by ANYA on January 08, 2003 at 03:20:48:

Has anyone any good solutions for post-nasal discharge?

My mother has had mucus and drip running down the back
of her throat for years. She doesn't get colds and
has always been a very healthy, very slim and active
individual.

I suggested she might be allergic to something": food,
additives, flowers or possibly even the cat, etc, etc.

Has anyone any ideas?

Hi, Anya.

Remember that the average person produces a quart and a half of secretion in the respiratory tract/24 hours, all of which must be swallowed--which is why we all swallow every few minutes 24 hours a day.

It IS possible for allergy to make the secretion thicker and so more noticeable.

However, most people who complain of PND (post nasal drip) have just become aware of what is normal and worry about it. I would bet that your mother has no idea that we all are drinking snot all the time at the rate of 1 1/2 quarts/24 hours.

Only explaining it, while suggesting SR, will eventually resolve it and direct the individual's attention elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Walt
