I've been having severe itching problems for a couple of months now. It comes and goes with no pattern. I can't relate it to anything I eat. I have been taking 12 caps of Primal Defense a day for the last couple of months to combat my leaky gut, but the itching just seems to get worse and worse. I went to my chiro yesterday about it, and he said that my histamine levels are through the roof and that I'm very alkaline. I told him about the PD, and he told me that I'm probably reabsorbing my food. He told me to increase my HCl and take some additional probiotic.
Is there anything else I can do besides the SR that I am already doing? I'm getting exercise and try to eat well, but not always possible. Thanks.

Was he just guessing? Did you ever have them tested?

Mike,
You can tell just by looking at me. My skin is very blotchy, and he scratched my forearm with his fingernail and you should have seen the welt.

Hi, Joanie.
Of course this is incipient hives with dermatographia.
How long have you done your SR twice a day and how did you certify that it was working?

I, too, have dermatographia and have for about 2 years.
It took me about 1.5 years to get it under control. I think
you need to remember that it probably took many years
to get to this point and not to expect immediate results,
even when you are doing the right things.
The things that have helped and continue to help me
are Skilled Relaxation, Massages, Exercise, and in my
case, magnesium glycinate supplements. When I
started to use magnesium, I was able to get off of
antihistamines completely. I would recommend that
you read in the archives all you can about magnesium
and also do an Internet search on magnesium
deficiency and read up on it to see if this could also be
something that you would benefit from.
Surprisingly, I now am thankful that I have chronic hives
as it made me aware of slowing down, relaxing,
exercising and the magnesium deficiency before I had
more serious problems from stress build-up. I can
immediately tell if I need to get back on track because
the dermatographia will then rear it's ugly head again.
Hope this helps.

Itching like that is usually related to something internal, and not external. It's hard to say what is causing this without at least an examination or medical history to go on, but I would suggest increasing your intake of EFA's, lowering your intake of Primal Defense to 6 caps per day, and increasing your intake of acid foods. Do you know your metabolic type?

What is the most accurate way to find out your metabolic type?

Thanks HY. I will decrease the PD immediately. I just began taking a TBS of cod liver oil per day. We'll see if that helps. I do eat a lot of meat. What other foods are acidic? I am a protein type and I have Wolcott's book.

Thanks for your comments Kay. I already take mg. glycinate and have been for a while due to leg cramps, palpitations, and restless leg syndrome. Admittedly, the SR twice per day has not been a high priority (I do it once in the am), but I guess I will have to make it a priority now that I'm in the state I'm in. Sigh!
I do get exercise, but the massages are few and far between. Not in the budget right now.

Grains are highly acidic for you. Low-sugar fruits and non-starchy vegetables are best for you. Just don't overdo them. You need a lot of omega-3's so make sure you get enough fish oil. You can't get the amount of Omega-3's that you need from COD liver oil or you will get toxic amounts of vitamins A and D. You might need to add a few caps of fish oil for the extra omega-3's. Aim to get 2.5-3g of fish oil daily

The most accurate way is through a lengthy questionaire, pH testing, hair analysis, glucose challenge, temperature readings, but the questionaire can be sufficient for those that can't do the rest of the tests. www.healthexcel.com is a website where advanced metabolic typing is available

Thanks sweetie,
I also eat about 2 TBS of ground flax seeds daily. Will that be enough Omega 3? Also, are the grains good or bad since I'm alkaline right now?

Thanks, Kay.
You have mentioned one more thing that commonly happens that the unitiated would never believe: "I am grateful for my chronic hives (sic, any chronic condition) for its giving me the opportunity to learn."
Wise healers have said for thousands of years: "Illness is an opportunity to learn."

Flax does not contain omega-3's but contains ALA which gets CONVERTED to Omega-3's in the body. The problem is, most people do not make the conversion very well. Fish oil is the best omega-3 supplement available
Grains would not be good simply because most people do not tolerate them. There are other ways to make you more acidic. First, you need to know your metabolic type. Without it, we don't know which foods makes you alkaline or acid.

HY, WHAT are the toxic levels for vit-A & D? (I recall recently reading an article about a doctor who remarked that he commonly used MUCH higher levels of, I 'thought' either vitamin-A or D than was typically regarded as 'safe')......just wondering what levels of vit-A & D you would consider acceptable (safe)? Thanks! (Great to see you again!)

I wouldn't consume more than 5000IU's of vitamin A and 1000IU's of Vitamin D per day. Some people have deficiencies and need more. Others have excesses and even 400-800IU's might be too much. It's really an individual factor. All in all, you don't want to consume more than 1 tbsp of cod liver oil but this won't be enough omega 3's. You need to consume 3g of omega 3's daily. Again, this is a broad level and does not reflect individual needs.
