Remember the days?

Posted by Nina on July 08, 2003 at 15:49:43:

I am in my mid-40's. Am I getting old or what? Remember the days when no-one took sleeping pills because after a very hard days work, who needed one? I think hard work needs to be written on more prescription pads today. Anti-depressants....My mother would have laughed at a dr. telling her she was depressed and needed a pill to relieve it or cure it. A doctor? Who went to doctors? Unless you were bleeding bad, you didn't go to doctors! Potty training at age 3-4 years? My mother would have said that the parents were to blame for not having their child potty-trained by this age and those cloth diapers would have been soggy and drooping. I think one of the many problems with us today is we think we live in a medicated world and that there is a pill for everything. I will agree with my mother. "If you get out in the field and work everyday or in your yard or in your house or at your job and really work hard, you won't have to worry about insomnia, depression, what's on television tonight, what the neighbors are doing, etc, etc." I do think hard work is something a lot of people know nothing about.
(My mother is 79 yrs. old and takes no meds-in very good health)

I agree to a certain extent. What I think is the key, is not to WORRY. Stress is the biggest killer these days, even more so that so called modern diseases. Stress CAUSES disease!

Hi Nina,

I personally think that television has a lot to do with people's unrealistic expectations of life and also, the tendency to think that there is a drug for everything or even that everything needs to be fixed! (Have you noticed how many commercials are for drugs? Egads!)

Best wishes,
Happygal

Thanks, Nina.

Since I was fortunate enough to have been raised on a big farm, I can appreciate what you are saying. That that was a privilege did not register with me at the time. Work began at age 6 and started at 4 AM until 8 PM with short breaks for 3 meals. During the school year we got to go to school (including getting ready) from 8 AM till 4 PM 5 days a week.

Unfortunately, few people have that privilege any more and have to actually deliberately schedule something vigorous to do to make up for it.

The amount of environmental stressors have dramatically increased over the past 40 years and that is why SR is so critical. The times they are a changin' and will only get more challenging each year.

Walt
