Hi,
My Mam has been ill for several months and her GP puts it
down to depression. But I think she could a autoimmune problem.
The only tests she has had so far from her GP is a full blood count and a TSH (both clear).
At the moment her stomach problems are causing the main concern as they seem to be getting worse and her stomach feels very swollen.
It's now starting to effect her back area.
Can you please advise
Symptoms:
Stomach is constantly aching and paining
- feels bloated & swollen.
(much worse than her usual IBS).
Persistent diarrhoea (almost every morning),
and increased urination.
“Foggy” headache that tends to move
from one part of her head to another (feels tight).
A feeling of fatigue & being totally drained of energy,
especially during day/afternoon.
Feelings of faintness, dizziness and weakness.
Sometimes has to be helped to the bathroom on a morning.
Intermittent palpitations (about six inches down from her throat).
Difficulties sleeping, waking up shaky & sweating in early hours.
Hypertension (approx 175/100 without taking Bendrofluazide)
Feeling tense, shaky & sweating up during the day.
Constant belching and burping
(only started happening a few months ago)
Dry mouth, always feels thirsty.
Occasional sore throat and problems swallowing
Head is often feverish and burning up but other parts are cold.
Numbness and tingling sensations in her face.
Sometimes a ringing sound in her ears and some ear ache.
Muscle twitching (especially her left leg).
Increased sensitivity to some medications and to noise.
Eyes feel gritty and dry.
Back pain - Hurts when touched.
Skin on her leg seems to be paper thin.
All her symptoms are worse on a morning.
Normally improves a little as the day goes on.

she is probably eating some foods that are wrong for her body. See the archives for "elimination diet'- you can use it to identify her problem foods- likely culprits would be wheat and dairy, so those are two to try going without for a few weeks, but some people are also sensitive to citrus, soy, nuts, chocolate, and other grains besides wheat.
Sugar and soda can also cause problems.

Hi,
That's what I was thinking, too -- some kind of allergies. Food is one possibility. Could she be allergic to something she is sleeping on or near? What about the drinking water or something very common? Chemicals in the house?
Best wishes,
Jan

I have an autoimmune disease and suffer from almost all you described. People with autoimmune diseases also suffer from many allergies usually. I believe the leaky gut theory to allergies and autoimmune issues. The 3 legged stool will only help her. My particular disease is primary Sjogren's syndrome. The main complaints are the fatigue, dry gritty eyes, dry mouth, sore throats/swallowing problems, dry lungs, gastritis, some muscle twithes-mostly legs, but occurs in face etc., swollen parotid glands, generalized body aches. etc. The blood work you mentioned won't show anything. If she really wants to know, detailed blood work would need to be ordered and a rheumatologist would be the best doc to see. Good luck

Hi, Dopple--.
The only thing that can cause all this is long term storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus. She needs to get all her medical records in hand and see a holistic physician for a second opinion. See the holistic practitioner archives for how to find one in her area.

Is your mom willing to make some lifestyle changes? I have friends who pop their prevacid, take their laxatives (did you know Walt says that diarrhea is a form of constipation?)and eat lots of refined carbs and continue to suffer. Since she has so many symptoms, she probably needs some professional help but I guarantee her GP will probably only suggest meds that make her even worse.

Dr Stoll. If this is all stress related then are you saying that it is basically chronic fatigue syndrome?
If so I thought that people with CFS have low blood pressure and not high blood pressure as my mother does?
Chris: You are nearly spot on. I live in Teesside!

Thanks, Dopple.
If you have read anything about stress on this website or in the bookstores (published in the past few years) you know that chronic stress can affect everything.
Whether it is CFS, FMS, PDQ, or EBV, etc., depends upon the individual's genetic propensity and NOT on the cause or the resolution.
Hope this helps.

Walt,
Thanks for you help.
What you say adds up. My Mother was fine apart from being on Stelazine for panic for many years. Until 6 month ago when she started to get chronic headaches and became sensitive to to the Stelazine. Since then the symptoms have multiplied. Her stomach which feels swollen is causing the main concern. It sounds like LGS.
Apart from trying to relax which food and supplements would you recommend to help her immune system, repair her gut and boost her energy?
And do you think she may have excess bacteria/parasites/candida?
Many Thanks.

Thanks, Dopple.
If only your mother had understood that the symptoms that required the Stelazine were early warnings of what is going on now. All the Stelazine did was allow her to put off what still has to be done.
Her best results would accrue from the 3LS (perfect unrefined diet, aerobic exercise, and effective SR). It is possible that, even at this late date, high doses of B complex, at least 200 milligrams of CoQ10 twice a day & at least 2000 milligrams of omega 3s twice a day, would help her start moving toward improvement sufficiently that she would begin to understand that she is finally moving in the right direction. She will need to be willing to put in the effort or all of this is a waste of time.
Let us know what happens.

Thank you very much for your answers Dr.Stoll.
Just one more thing, although my Mother normally has a foggy headache, she sometimes has "stabbing" pains in her head which can last for a couple of hours and she feels like she may pass out with the pain.
Do have an idea of why this happens and how to treat it?
(She's tried Paracetamol but they made it worse, Amitriptyline seems to claim it down somewhat).

Thanks, Dopple--.
Probably muscle tension headaches. See either a Chiropractor or a certified massage therapist and see what they say.

Thanks so much Dr.Stoll.
One more thing (really this time).
One of your replies was to see a Holistic Practioner.
But searching the net I've discovered that this term can cover many things from acupuncture to meditation.
So can you be more specific?
And do you think that acupuncture could help?
By the way, her stomach is a lot better over the last few days and the diahorra has stopped, but once again it is the headaches (3 or 4 different types including the tension ones you mentioned and the foggy ones) that are making her weak and dizzy.
Thanks again (I'll leave you in peace!).

Hi, Dopple.
The resources as to how to find a holistic practitioner mostly refer to MD's and DO's. Try them and you will see.
Acupuncture might help but I would have to see her to know how likely that is. Things are pretty far advanced to pin your hopes on that alone.

Dr.Stoll,
Thanks again.
My Mother is feeling a bit better.
The headaches are not as bad and the stomach problems much less. But she is having lots of problems with her left eye.
It is dry, sore and itchy. She has started to wear an eye patch to stop from rubbing it.
Any thoughts of any treatments or supplements that may help this?
Thanks, Chris.

A good optometrist of ophthalmologist can help with this.
