A small 99-cent 64-page booklet called "Think Yourself Well--Discover the Healing Power of Your Mind" caught my eye at the grocery store checkstand a couple of days ago. I took a quick look and bought it, thinking it might be good to send it to a relative who has some serious health issues.
Now that I have read it, I discovered that it's actually a great little reference booklet. It touches on the mind-body connection, stress and illness, and various ways we can use relaxation and meditation for healing. It mentions a lot of proponents of meditation--Herbert Benson, Bernie Siegel, Joan Borysenko, Allen Cohen, etc. It contains simple instructions for different types of relaxation, mindfulness meditation, and visualization for self-healing work.
"Think Yourself Well" wouldn't replace the excellent detailed information in Jan and Walt's book "Recapture Your Health", but it would be a great thing to give someone (like my relative) who is not likely to dive into a big book right off the bat. Or for someone just getting started on a healing path and struggling with the importance and effectiveness of a regular relaxation and meditation practice.
Hope this helps,
Nutmeg

That's great Nutmeg! Which grocer, and where within the store did you see this booklet, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks,
k.

Hi k,
I think the booklet is probably ubiquitous in grocery stores, but I got mine at Safeway, and also saw it at Fred Meyer (a Northwest chain). It was in the racks right above the conveyor belt at the checkstands. Usually the little magazine/booklets you see in these spots are about horoscopes, weight loss, how to talk to your cat, and other eye-catching subjects. I was surprised to find something so well-done and useful there.
Let's see, it's published by Mini Mag Group and is #426. It's about 3x5 inches in size and has a light blue & white cover with pink & blue printing and a photo of a woman wearing a white bathrobe on the front. Hope you can find it.

Hi Nutmeg,
Thanks a bunch, I appreciate the info. I think it might be handy to carry it around in my purse and pull it out for ideas and techniques on the spot. :-)
How's your brother doing these days? I've been so busy and not able to keep up-to-date lately.
k.

Hi k,
You may have guessed that I mailed the booklet to my brother today. I meant to buy myself another copy at the store, but I forgot. It does have a lot of detailed how-to's on various techniques. Very handy for quick reference.
I haven't posted anything lately, but Brother is not doing so hot. He spent another week in the hospital a few days after he was released from his last surgery. His arm and legs puffed up from fluid retention, so they admitted him. They were concerned about heart, liver, and kidney function, and finding deep pockets of infection, but all the tests turned out fine. They think the swelling is from infection in the skin. They debrided an area on his upper arm where the skin had turned black. I don't even want to think about what that looked like.
He's been home for a week now. The swelling is starting to go down now with continued antibiotic treatment, but he is still in tremendous pain, especially in the upper arm. I really worry about him, but he does have a few friends in the area who check in, bring food, do chores and stuff like that, and I talk to him on the phone at least once a day.
The extended infections has put him behind schedule for receiving the new prosthesis. The docs said that surgery would probably not be for another 4-6 months. He's getting some physical therapy now to help maintain some function of the arm.
We had a prayer vigil for him about 10 days ago, and a woman offered to send him Reiki at another time. I suggested he just relax and sit quietly during that time. He's not very spiritual or holistic-minded, but he said he did feel a very peaceful feeling during the time the Reiki treatment was sent. I thought that was really significant. I continue to send him healing energy, as do many others.
Thanks for asking, and for listening, k. I appreciate your concern very much.

Hi Nutmeg,
I'm glad you sent the booklet to your brother, it might just strike a nerve, especially since he's in such a vulnerable place right now.
I hope his infection continues to wane, it must be so frustrating and uncomfortable. I think it's great that you're having vigils, sending him energy, reiki, etc. He has nothing to loose and everything to gain by allowing healing energy to come into his life.
Nutmeg, you have been very generous with your help and concern for others on this board, and the very least I can do is to take an interest, and send some healing vibes to both you and your brother.
Best wishes and lots of prayers,
k.
