ginger, stomach, stress and meditation

Posted by Laura on June 06, 2001 at 01:29:11:

Dear Dr. Stoll,

I am in my second week of trying your ginger root juice therapy for GERD and it's probably helping (I'll know more soon). My question is about meditation. I believe my stomach/digestion problems are pretty much due to emotional stress (I have lots of tough things going on right now in my personal life) so I'm interested in relaxation techniques. I took a course in TM about 15 years ago and did it for a while (I don't remember how long -- maybe a year), but my experience was that it relaxed me wonderfully for a short time, but as soon as I started thinking about my worries again I'd quickly get as stressed out as before. That's mainly why I didn't keep it up. I believe myself to be pretty emotionally unstable (i.e. I can go quickly from relaxed to tense) -- I don't know if that plays a role.

So -- my question is if you have comments or advice on meditation. I'd like to try it again, but I don't have that much confidence it will really help me relax.

Any advice?

Thanks a lot in advance. (I think it's wonderful you are willing to answer questions like this!)

Laura

Hi, Laura.

There is a world of difference between acute stress and the chronic accumulation of stress-effect in the hypothalamus (which is what you need to change).

Start by reading the article on the homepage about the "Modern Medical Interpretation of Stress".

Before, you were "fixing the rood when it was raining" and you need to "fix the roof when the sun is shining"! If you need more information, you should go to the glossary, archives and search engine about stress and about SR.

THEN, let us know what you have learned and how you do.

Walt
