Tonsils and associated problems

Posted by Owen Harkin on June 21, 2001 at 08:01:49:

Dear Doctor,
I am a 34yr old male who up to 3 months ago was an outgoing, happy individual. After a series of winter throat infections and colds I have a constant stream of pains and aches which I have been unable to lose. One of my tonsils is permanently swollen (years) and more recently they are both painful at times, after a recent course of antibiotics the swelling has reduced slightly but still remains larger than the other and pitted. My breath is also unpleasant and have a bad taste in my mouth. I have frequent pains in my neck, armpits and groin area but no significant gland swelling in these areas. I am more lethargic than normal and have some dizzy spells. I have trouble sleeping for a full night and wake up often in a sweat and get easily stressed with minor irritations. I have had a full blood test recently which indicated no significant problems.
Therefore I am at a loss to explain my problems other than stress or bacteria in my throat which is causing other problems. I have recently taken Echinacea and have not had a cold/flu since March but this has not helped my swollen tonsil or aches. My wife thinks I am a hypochrondriac and have nothing wrong with me but I am worrided sick that I may have something more serious. Please help!

Hi, Owen.

Tonsils that are as damaged as these are better removed. However, having said that, I do not believe that any of your symptoms, except perhaps the bad taste and breath you notice from the inspissated crypts, will disappear with the tonsils.

If that is true, recontact this BB when you are sure and we can discuss the real causes behind your main symptoms.

Walt
